Court challenge begins in Georgia on evolution

School officials in suburban Cobb County go to court Monday to defend themselves against a lawsuit accusing the district of promoting religion by requiring that science textbooks warn students evolution is "a theory, not a fact."

The trial in U.S. District Court is expected to last four days.

The lawsuit argues that the disclaimer restricts the teaching of evolution, promotes the teaching of creationism and discriminates against particular religions.

County school officials said their warning, in the form of stickers inserted in science books, simply encourages students to keep an open mind.

The stickers read: "This textbook contains material on evolution. Evolution is a theory, not a fact, regarding the origin of living things. This material should be approached with an open mind, studied carefully and critically considered."

The lawsuit was filed by six parents and the Georgia chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.

"I'm a strong advocate for the separation of church and state," said one of the parents, Jeffrey Selman. "I have no problem with anybody's religious beliefs. I just want an adequate educational system."

"I have no problem with anybody's religious beliefs."

He then continued: "But when I see that Christian crap, I just have to file a lawsuit!"

Which religion promulgates the theory of evolution? This is news to me.

How does it promote the teaching of creationism when the word "creationism" is not even mentioned? These people are whack-jobs!

Let's watch the court and the Judge, God will not be denied. We are not socialist, This country was founded on JUDEO CHRISTIAN belief's and Laws. The majority of the people in this country have voted, and sent a strong message to our government representatives and the courts which direction to lead this country.

This Marxist Socialism must be removed.

The best argument for the evolution are the creationists, for they have not evolved. Science education in American secondary schools is dumps already, and to train tomorrow's biologists and geneticists the last thing one needs is the input from "intelligent design" crowd. Here one is talking about the future jobs which better be kept here and not outsourced.

It's a Darwinian slip.

Even if I did not believe in creationism, I could never believe in evolution.

Scientists cannot explain how or when life began.

A theory, yes! More like a myth. I would suggest that they read Genesis in the Bible.

[requiring that science textbooks warn students evolution is "a theory, not a fact.]

OK, I missed it...is there something religious about that statement? Last I remember evolution really was just a THEORY....I think the problem these folks have is that they're under the delusion that evolution has been undeniably proven.

Scientists cannot explain how or when life began.

Of course, they can! Just they are not sure, unlike you

They want to fool you into believing this is brought by parents. It's an ACLU continuing crusade to rid this country of it's sensibilities.

Here's where the confusion is: not the difference between theory and fact, but the misapplication of theory or fact. Obviously evolution is both a theory and a fact. And so the statement from the AP article may be compared to the actual statement found in the texts:

"Last I remember evolution really was just a THEORY"

That was my thought exactly. I wouldn't have a problem with Creation being taught as long as it was taught as a theory as well. IMHO, the Big Bang theory is pretty close to a creation theory, but I am not religious so I don't know how much clout my opinion has.

Regardless, it is up to the parent to talk to their child about what they are learning in school. In today's society, parents don't take their responsibilities seriously enough. They are too busy being selfish to take an active role in their child's life.

Scientists cannot explain how or when life began.

Evolution has nothing to do with how life began.

It's an explanation of how species originated.

Yes, there's a great deal of debate in the scientific community on how life began.

A classic strawman by the uneducated to change evolution into a "how life began" discussion.

One enormous problem is the general public doesn't understand what "theory" means in science.

Relativity is "just a theory" as well.

What the general public THINKS "theory" means is actually what "hypothesis" means to a scientist.

FYI..."Intelligent Design"...new theory held primarily by believers, but also by some atheist scientist as well. The more and more they discover of the universe it no longer looks like a random phenomenon.
