N.J. SHOWDOWN (Poll within margin of error)
New York Post ^ | November 1, 2004 | LORENA MONGELLI and STEPHANIE GASKELL

November 1, 2004 -- Gov. Pataki and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton campaigned on behalf of their White House candidates in New Jersey yesterday, as the presidential race remained surprisingly tight there. "A few months ago, who would've thought I'd be here in the battleground state of New Jersey?" Pataki said during a stump speech at the Bergen County Republican Organization in Hackensack.

"You can see what's going to win this election is the grass-roots operation."

A new poll shows that Sen. John Kerry's lead is just 4 points, within the survey's margin of error. .....

The latest Star-Ledger/Eagleton-Rutgers poll, which was conducted Wednesday through Friday, shows that Bush's gains in New Jersey are because of his favorable ratings when it comes to terrorism.

Forty percent of voters said terrorism was their top concern, compared to 23 percent for the economy, 21 percent for the war and 13 percent for health care.

"Concerns about terrorism have led to wide swings among the New Jersey electorate throughout the fall," said acting poll director Patrick Murray.

"Early poll results last week indicated that the importance of terrorism in the vote decision was already on the rise, with a net gain going to President Bush."

Voters thought Bush was better able to handle terrorism than Kerry by an overwhelming margin — 78 percent to 16 percent.

It would be great if W won NJ; unfortunately, it's very likely the state will probably "come home" to the democrats. But if W could lose it within the single digit margin, it would bode well.

Half on NJ wakes up every mornign and can see the changed skyline on NYC...and NJ lost a greater % of its citizens during 9/11 than did NY..in some ways, it impacted NJ even more..the OBL tape may be enough to convince folks, once they get into the voting booth, that we need W..

It is crunch time and people recognize that the choice they make could effect their lives greatly.

That is why I expect the polls to be shown to be wrong.

I think Kerry should've shown up in a Red Sox hat.

That would've got him over the top!

There is a GREAT new radio ad for Bush/Cheney running here in NJ this morning!

It's the voice of the mother of an NYPD officer who was killed when he rushed to the rescue at the World Trade Center.

(It might have been Arlene Howard, the NYPD mother who gave her son's badge to President Bush, but I'm not sure.)

This ad is extremely effective. It breaks your heart. The mother talks in a calm, loving voice about her son and about how glad she is that his badge was found.

She then goes on to talk about how important it is to reelect President Bush. (Wish I could remember the script, but after the first few words I was crying through the whole thing. I think the ad was sponsored by the NJ state Republican committee.)

What a slap in Kerry's hangdog face if they call NJ for Bush tomorrow night. That, my friends, would be lovely.

Re previous post 11:

Here's the great new ad running in NJ. The heroic officer who died was Port Authority Officer Kenneth Tietjen, and his mother who narrates the ad is Mrs. Janice Tietjen of Middletown, NJ.

Listen to the audio HERE
