After Action Report |
October 31, 2004 |
Well, FREEPERs, the Alachua County Republicans pulled off a fantastic event the the Gainesville Regional Airport in Gainesville, Florida. The crowd was HUGE. The estimates are anywhere from 20,000 to 25,000 showed up for the event. It may have been more. I (and my son, "mattdono jr")arrived to a significant amount of traffic about 5 miles away from the airport. It felt like I was going to a Gator game. On the street corner right outside the event, there were about a dozen of the "unbathed" (i.e., Kerry supporters). They were the typical derelict sort, replete with all kinds of stupid signs. As a concerned citizen, I was sure to give them some friendly advice. You know, something along the lines of "Take a bath, get a haircut, get a job, pay taxes, and you will know WHY I'M VOTING FOR BUSH!". That brought a slew of cheers from W fans that were riding along in traffic waiting to get into the event. My #1 fan and I parked the car and caught a shuttle across the airfield where the event was being held. The crowd was already swelling and there was a buzz in the air. Made it through security no problem. The Secret Service was very (very) efficient in getting the people through (if only the airport screeners were that good!). Grabbed some complimentary water, as it was pretty hot in Gainesville. I get inside the event, walk around a little bit and who do I find: FREEPER FlaAvalanche. FlaAvalanche and I are friends outside of the forum, so I reintroduced my son, took in some of the sights. I should pause and tell everyone on the forum that, hands down, Republican women are SO much better looking than those liberal femi-nazis. I will tell everyone that there were A LOT of young people there (18-21). I think that the majority of the crowd was 18-35. That's a good sign. Also, I noticed that there was genuine diversity in the crowd (African Americans, Asians, Latinos, you name it even gringos like me). Got settled in for the event. Several speakers took to the stage and were greeted with loud applause. Air Force One arrived to a rocking rendition of the theme from Top Gun (the instrumental deal). Then, W came in and the crowd "popped". I thought that I was at a rock concert or something. As I was about 50-75 feet away from the stage, it was particularly loud. W gave a great stump speech, including a line that I loved. He was talking about how Kerry voted for the war, then voted against the funding. Those comments drew boos and what not. Then, W had the capper, "Then, my opponent entered the flip-flop Hall of Fame when he said, 'Actually, I did vote for the $87 billion, right before I voted against it'". It was classic. The crowd loved it. He finished off the event and the people were rocking. My son and I said goodbye to FlaAvalanche and headed to the car. As we were going to the car, I got a snap shot of Air Force One (and I got 2 minutes worth of video that I will try to post when I get a chance). Below is some of the pics that I took at the event. It took a while to get out of the parking log, but, no fear, mattdono jr made it home in time for trick-or-treating. It was a fantastic event and I will remember it for the rest of my life. |
And last but not least, this last picture is dedicated to my FREEPER FRiend Chieftain (look closely at the black and yellow patch in the lower right). This one's for you Chieftain!

green with envy!
Looks like a great rally! Awesome!
great job......thanks
WOO HOO!..Thanks for the report!
Thanks for this. I am tired of watching Alan Deutcherwitz (sp) with Geraldo. It sent me back to the OJ trial...good gawd!
Anyway, thanks for the update!
Matt, did you have any problems having your camera at the event? I am going to one of the rallies tomorrow and am not sure if cameras will be banned or not. It looks like a ton of people had digital cameras at your event.
Thanks for the story and your posting your pictures.
Go President Bush!
No problem for digitals. I would suggest that you "pack light". You will need your tickets AND your id. I had tickets, money, wallet, digital camera and my son.
PING...GWB Rally in Gainesville, Florida
Great report and photos -- it is awesome to see President Bush in person!
We were able to bring in a digital camera, a 35mm camera, and our cellphones (turned on when SecService checks them-turn off when GW is speaking)...I seen them make a lady take a drink of whatever it was they allowed her to bring in, but they were making everyone else leave water bottles and cups, etc behind...DO NOT forget to leave your pocketknives at home or in your car either...found this out the hardway myself, completely unintentional...but the first guy wasn't too happy with me when he missed it and I turned around to ask him about it ;)
i was there too, it was good. i saw a kid who wrote a letter to bortze, full of bad grammar, that neal ran on the air a few years ago. the kid is now a senior at UF and a republican and bortze fan. there were babies, and senior seniors, wheel chairs.
i asked a kid in orange who was doing stuff if he was a republican volunter, he said yes. i thanked him and he was profusely grateful. said i was the first to thank them. they were from jackson, mississipi, he was a republican officer at the college there that i can't remember the name. they asked him to line up a group of volunteers. they weren't told where they were going and what they were doing til they got on the bus. there were 5 that i took group pics with an assortment of cameras for them. i had the blue tickets, but had lost my DD who was right up front. Dubya nudged jeb to look at her hat, and they laughed. she turns 20 on the 4th, i am so glad to see the youth and different races. we have a black candidate R running for county commision, sure hope he wins. the county head Repub got him on the ticket with a petition.
I ventured into the crowd to get a good look at dubya. i never saw jeb or laura. lots of people left when dubya started speaking, was really a crappy place for a rally....you couldn't see.
and i shamely yelled at one of the token protesters who were immediately outside the building we left through. somedays i wish i would act like a lady, but i am overcome with the can't help its. i can't believe he came and i am so glad i went.
take a light pocket book in too...i swear the dude was wearing black gloves and went through the whole thing, probably took him a minute, lolol...
also the best t shirts "10 out of 10 terrorists support kerry", and "kerry for president of france".
Your after-action report was just as ELECTRIFYING!
Thanks for that special mention and picture of that biker's vest patch!
Let's Get Out The Vote! 36 hours to VICTORY!
Just posting to say thank you for all you've done and all you're doing!!
I'm glad you liked the biker's patch. The first thing I thought of was all of the veterans that probably feel that way about Fonda. I had to snap off that picture for all the vets out there. Thanks for protecting all of us for all these years.
