Thanks for the real news blurb. No money changes hands, but this woman's career is over. Death by professional suicide. She should never have gone after him if she couldn't keep from bragging to everyone within earshot of how she was planning to set him up.

The question is, will she go ahead with the tell-all book she planned? Or does the wording of the settlement directly or indirectly exclude that possibility, ?

Newbie? Not really. Been a conservative for about 25 years after leaving the Democratic Party in 1980. I've been reading the posts here a lot the past few months but never posted until lately.

No. Accurate. Your headline is inaccurate.

So he gets a reputation he wants? After playing the stand up guy? Mackris walks away unscathed and probably wealthier?

Uh, Duh.

I'm sure he is guilty of saying the things that Mackris alleged he said.

Bill O'Reilly can't afford to have those tapes released, even if he didn't 'sexually harrass' the woman. Its only harassment if she clearly indicated to him that his talk was unwanted. ..but the constant torment he'd be subject to if the tapes get out caused him to settle.

Still, I won't be tuning in to his show to see how he spins it. Life is way too short to waste listening to blowhards like O'Reilly. My advise to his viewers would be "Get a Life".

I've never viewed settling a case as a sign of guilt. To me it simply means people have agreed to get an ugly situation out of the way. Lawyers can make your life unbearable, especially when you are in the public eye.

I have no idea whether OReilly is guilty or not. But I know he is vindictive as hell. What I care about is what he can do for the conservative cause.

Tonight people should be tuning in, because of the settlement. I hope he tars Kerry the same way he has been all week, with his invisible interview.

You can hear the glee in his voice, talking about how no one knows what Kerry stands for. He's mad Kerry dissed him. And he is going to get him. I hope he gets him good, tonight.

Maybe he just made a financial decision....cheaper to give her a mil than pay far more than that in lawyers and smeared reputation.

Would YOU make such a decision if someone had made such an allegation against you?

I'd rather lose home and everything than give in to extortion.

IMO, O'Reilly will retain both his job, his ratings and his wife.

I'm sure he learned a lesson and will stay in the "No Sin" zone as he moves on in his career.

but I'm going to assume that he is not guilty of whatever he was being accused of.

Not me. Guilty as charged. Probably a 4 -8 million investment in his future.

Dear sinkspur,

It's likely that Mr. O'Reilly paid the young lady in the settlement.

Otherwise, it wouldn't have been sealed.

If her case were so weak as to be not even worth giving it a shot at trial, he'd have let her swing in the wind until she withdrew. In exchange, he'd have withdrawn, and been able to proclaim his innocence.

Silence only happens if his (and Fox's) lawyers thought there was a good chance he (and Fox) would have been held liable, and they agreed to pay some bucks.

I don't know how many bucks were paid, but all signs point to some payment.
