Please Let Terri Schiavo Go!

Please Let Terri Schiavo Go! By Dave Gibson (06/08/04)

I recently received an email from the American Family Association, which once again told the painful story of Terri Schiavo. The AFA strongly urged me to contact Governor Jeb Bush (R-Fla.), and beg him to take more measures to see that Mrs. Schiavo continue to be kept alive.

The AFA email also complained that in 1995, Terri's husband (Michael) began living with another woman and announced their engagement two years later...As if Mr. Schiavo's life is any of these people's business! They also went on to say of Michael Schiavo: "he continues to live with his lover and wait for the day Terri will die." In addition to their attempt to paint Michael Schiavo as evil incarnate, they claim that there is a large inheritance to be had, after Terri's death...Another lie!

I truly hope that there is a special place in hell for these people, who are doing nothing but adding to Michael Schiavo's pain.

For those of you who do not know...Terri Schiavo is a Florida woman, who suffered heart failure in 1990. As a result of the attack, oxygen was cut off to her brain which robbed her of any cognitive ability. She has been in a vegetative state since the 1990 incident. She cannot wash, dress, nor feed herself. Doctors inserted a feeding tube directly into her stomach. She is unable to speak or communicate in any form. Terri Schiavo has spent the last 14 years in a hospital bed, unable to move.

Despite Terri's tragic existence, and her husband's wish to allow her to die with at least a shred of dignity...There are many who wish to keep her "alive." Last October, the Florida State Legislature passed a bill which allowed Gov. Bush to order the feeding tube replaced--after her husband told doctors to remove it.

Immediately after signing the measure last October, Gov. Bush said in a statement: " Like tens of thousands of Floridians who have raised their voices in support of Terri Schiavo's right to live, I have been deeply moved by these tragic circumstances."

The key word in the governor's statement is "live." No one of sound mind could say honestly that the current state in which Terri Schiavo exists, could be considered living!

Conversely, Oregon is the only state in the country, which allows doctors to help quicken the death of a terminally ill patient. The law was voted in by Oregonians in 1994. It allows physicians to prescribe a lethal dose of narcotics to anyone suffering from a terminal illness, who asks for their assistance. The law is called the Death With Dignity Act.

Of course, United States Attorney General John Ashcroft challenged the law and tried to block the wishes of Oregon's voters. However, on May 26 the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the Bush Administration had no right to interfere with any state's doctor-assisted suicide law. Ashcroft's Justice Department had maintained that suicide is not a "legitimate medical purpose." The court though, saw it differently...Thank God!

The issue of physician-assisted suicide or euthanasia has long been a topic of heated debate. I believe that it is a decision which must be left exclusively to the patient and their doctor. Politicians simply have no place in this matter!

In Terri Schiavo's case, she is not able to communicate her wishes to the doctors. That decision must then be left to the one closest to her--her husband Michael.

I consider myself to be a compassionate man. I love animals and have been fortunate enough to have shared my life with several of them. Consequently, I have been faced with the deaths of many of my best friends. Many times, I have had to make the decision which ended their suffering. It is a measure of last-resort and it is always one made out of love and compassion.

When it comes to the issue of ending the suffering of one's beloved pet...We all seem to be in agreement, that it is the right thing to do. We hear our friends say: 'it is selfish to keep them here, only for you, and "it is cruel to allow them to go on suffering." They are absolutely right, it is cruel to allow another living being to suffer, with no hope of recovery.

If our animals deserve to end their lives with compassion and dignity...Do not our human loved-ones deserve at least, as much?

Let Terri go.

I apologize- I don't know how to post. But I stumbled across this and felt it needed to be shared. Expecially when I read how this man think that I, and all you other Terri supporters, have a special place in hell for adding to Michael Schiavo's pain! Direct Quote! Read this and give me grace if I'm messed up in posting it. -Jacque from Texas

Remember she is not on life support. She is just being fed through a tube. To starve her to death is very painful and is not the same as turning off a breathing machine.

The guy is obviously an atheist and has no respect for innocent human life...reminds me of John Kerry.

"Expecially when I read how this man think that I, and all you other Terri supporters, have a special place in hell for adding to Michael Schiavo's pain!"

Two points:

1) the pain we should be worrying about is Terry Schiavo's--not Michael's.

2) my wife showed me an article about a woman in Terry's identical situation. SHE was given the recuperative therapy recommended by Terry's original physician, and which Michael has DENIED Terry. She made a full recovery.

That's the key there. She is still breathing on her own and her body is self-sustaning for the most part, aside from the feed tube.

RIGHT! This post is full of lies. I don't think Mr. Animal Lover that he is would advocate starving and dehydrating dogs.

She has some quality of life left. She can understand. She can still laugh. She can still feel pain. She is still a human being. Michael Schiavo wants us to commit murder. We must fight to the end to make sure this does not happen.

I don't understand those who say Terri should be kept "alive" at all costs. Have they ever thought that maybe she's ready to go to God and leave her pain and suffering behind? Have they ever thought that God is wondering why these people won't let Terri come to Him?

God's plan is not for us to say only for us to follow.

Nevermind, that Terri's husband may well have had something to do with her condition and he is the only one that claims she wanted to die under these conditions. Nevermind, there is evidence she was never given access to a proper rehabilitation program. Or that her parents don't want her to die a cruel, painful death from starvation.

No, the worse thing about this is the government ordering someone to die with their express consent in the form of a legal will. That's a dangerous precedent.

"The guy is obviously an atheist and has no respect for innocent human life...reminds me of John Kerry."

Of course, but he certainly pulls from the Bible the notion of hell and feels free to damn us all! Irony!

There's such a simple solution. The court should appoint a guardian for Terry, order Michael and Terry Schiavo divorced, and instruct the guardian to work with her parents to ensure her continuing care and begin therapy. There's a ton of information missing from this story about how Schiavo wouldn't allow therapy and keeps her parents from seeing her, etc.
Just get Michael Schiavo out of the picture.
And by the way, don't compare people to pets. In me and Terry Schiavo's religion we have redeemable souls and pets don't. Think differently if you want, but this about Terry Schiavo's soul. Terry Schiavo is a Catholic and her religion prohibits assisted suicide so she would not have wanted to die this way, knowing perdition awaits.
Perdition surely awaits Michael Schiavo and the craven slut-mother of his subsequent illegitmate get.

God's plan is not for us to say only for us to follow."

Have you not been paying attention? God sustained her body for 6 days without food and water- partly due to her fighting and strong will to live. If she was ready to go, she'd go.

Jesus and I are best friends and I've talked to Him and the Father hours upon hours upon hours about this. He led me into this fight to prevent Terri's murder. Not "going home."

It's not a departure from faith to oppose murder of the innocence. We're supposed to rescue those being led away to death, not say, "Isn't that nice that they're going to kill her painfully and slowly- She's going to God."

And Terri is ALIVE in every sense. No need to put quotes around that.

You think deliberately starving someone to death is part of God's plan?? Sick.
