Is it legal to distribute copies of Stolen Honor? (vanity)

Posted on 10/23/2004 12:43:45 PM PDT by mike182d

I have a program on my computer that can convert video files into a format playable on DVD players. So, I was wondering if it would be legal to buy a spindel of blank CDs, produce mass copies of this, and distribute to Dems door to door (and Repubs too!) to get the word out.

Is this kocher(sp?)?

Not without permission of the copyright holder of the film.

The makers of Stolen Honor announced it will be available for free for everyone on the internet soon. In it's entirety. I heard it this morning on Fox and Friends!

"Not without permission"

While that is true, the copyright holders are releasing it for free on Monday and have said that they will grant viewing rights for free for anybody who wishes to show it in it's entirety. I highly doubt that they are going to bust out a copyright lawsuit, their goal in the first place was to inform the public about sKerry, not make money.

I wasn't aware of this. This is great!

Do you have a link to this, by any chance, if you do, it's worth posting this info on it's own in Announcements, to make sure everyone will see it.

Once released I would recommend converting to Quicktime file that automatically begins playing. Place on websites, outakes in emails (due to file size) etc.

If it's copyrighted (and I suspect it is), under US copyright law you need permission from the copyright holder to reproduce and distribute it (or publicly display, etc. - there are specifics under US copyright law).

Since they've posted in on the web for free download, they may not have a problem with you reproducing and distributing. Check the download site - is there a Terms of Use? If so, read that and see what it allows to do with the content. If it doesn't allow for that, you might want to write to the contact on the site and ask for permission to do so. Since they seem to want to get this out, my guess is they will grant you at least limited license rights.

It's permissable as long as you do not make a profit or charge for the cds or dvds.
