Got another call from my wife about an hour ago. At her doctor's appointment, she spoke with a man from the Lancaster, Pa., area. He told her that for the first time the Amish are registering to vote and all are registering Republican. Now, before anyone gets a bug up there arse and offers a flip comment, I am posting this to know if anyone knows about this and can verify. Also, is it true that the Amish has never registered to vote before?
I'm thinking that if this is true, then these people get it. If the Islamofacists get in charge, they are dead!
If I'm correct, they don't think Technology is evil per se, they just think it is better to leave it by the wayside to pay attention to God. So I don't think they would have a problem using an electronic voting machine. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, because most of what I know about the Amish is from 'Witness' and the documentary 'The Devil's Playground'.
I was kidding
So all the horse hockey at the polls won't be from Democrats!!??
I just love Kirk fans.
I'd like to know too, since all I know about the Amish I learned from "The Electric Amish" Band, and from Weird Al... ;)
There are a lot of different varieties of Amish and Mennonites; the 18,000 refers to just one group of Old Order Amish. There are more than 18,000 Amish in PA (hard to find an exact figure, though. There are apparently 150,000 in the country as a whole.)
Then you have the Mennonites which dress like Amish but drive cars, etc. above and beyond the different varieties of Amish.
Ummmmmmm. Shoo-fly pie (drool forms at corners of mouth). My childhood returns.
clop-clop-clop *BANG* clop-clop-clop
Good news if true.
That being said I feel compelled to post this oldie but goodie:
Thou art making me LOL!
Amish for Bush Bump
"They must have made up their minds while watching the debate on TV."
---Then called all their friends on the phone to discuss it
Probably the one thing most people would be surprised by is how wealthy the Amish are.
Above and beyond cultural concerns I'm sure they lean Republican because they're unhappy with taxes (especially since they basically use no government services at all.)
But, they're not spending money on a lot of stuff we are (electricity, phone, computer, college, etc.) and typically have quite rich farmland. The majority of them are pretty loaded.
Don't make me get Medieval on your heiny...
I think most of the Amish are FReepers, although not registered. Or dead, for that matter.
Kinda reminds me of the TreeFolk from Lord of the Rings who finally see the encroachment of evil hitting their "forest".... Let's go, TreeBeard!
I know quite a few Amish people (just from having grown up in an area near an Amish community).
They are generally encouraged to stay out of "things of this world" and to "pray that god takes care of the future" instead of being politically active.
It is not against their religion to vote--and some always have. However, it is definitely encouraged to not be political--to leave things in god's hands instead.
However--most of them are with the republicans on the issues--so it is a shame that they do not speak out more. It is encouraging to see more of them voting.
