AMISH VOTING!

Posted on 10/22/2004 12:01:33 PM PDT by 7thson

Got another call from my wife about an hour ago. At her doctor's appointment, she spoke with a man from the Lancaster, Pa., area. He told her that for the first time the Amish are registering to vote and all are registering Republican. Now, before anyone gets a bug up there arse and offers a flip comment, I am posting this to know if anyone knows about this and can verify. Also, is it true that the Amish has never registered to vote before?

I'm thinking that if this is true, then these people get it. If the Islamofacists get in charge, they are dead!

If I'm correct, they don't think Technology is evil per se, they just think it is better to leave it by the wayside to pay attention to God. So I don't think they would have a problem using an electronic voting machine. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, because most of what I know about the Amish is from 'Witness' and the documentary 'The Devil's Playground'.

I'd like to know too, since all I know about the Amish I learned from "The Electric Amish" Band, and from Weird Al... ;)

There are a lot of different varieties of Amish and Mennonites; the 18,000 refers to just one group of Old Order Amish. There are more than 18,000 Amish in PA (hard to find an exact figure, though. There are apparently 150,000 in the country as a whole.)

Then you have the Mennonites which dress like Amish but drive cars, etc. above and beyond the different varieties of Amish.

While it it is true that the Amish do not represent a large voting block I think we need to look at this news in context. It comes at the same time that the traditionally reliable Jewish and Black votes are eroding for the Democrats. No doubt at least part of the radical leftwing block is disenfranchised by Kerry's insistence that he will stay the course in Iraq and his need to play Elmer Fudd this week. So, finding out that Amish will vote in large numbers is just another incremental nail in Kerry's coffin. STICK A FORK IN HIM!

Probably the one thing most people would be surprised by is how wealthy the Amish are.

Above and beyond cultural concerns I'm sure they lean Republican because they're unhappy with taxes (especially since they basically use no government services at all.)

But, they're not spending money on a lot of stuff we are (electricity, phone, computer, college, etc.) and typically have quite rich farmland. The majority of them are pretty loaded.

I saw two young Amish men at the Bush Rally in Hershey, PA yesterday. I've lived here long enough to know that this is not typical. The 'Plain Folk' are very concerned about Kerry and the liberal agenda.

I think most of the Amish are FReepers, although not registered. Or dead, for that matter.

I know quite a few Amish people (just from having grown up in an area near an Amish community).

They are generally encouraged to stay out of "things of this world" and to "pray that god takes care of the future" instead of being politically active.

It is not against their religion to vote--and some always have. However, it is definitely encouraged to not be political--to leave things in god's hands instead.

However--most of them are with the republicans on the issues--so it is a shame that they do not speak out more. It is encouraging to see more of them voting.

Believe it or not Florida has a few Amish folks here as well.

Yeah, I saw that in the documentary The Devil's Playground. Anyone interested in Amish culture should watch it; they're not so disconnected from modern society as many might think.
