Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation Endorses President George W. Bush

EAU CLAIRE, WI – Today, The Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation, the state’s largest farm organization, announced its endorsement of George W. Bush for President.  Today’s endorsement marks the first-ever presidential endorsement in the Farm Bureau’s eighty-four year history.  48,190 member families belong to the Wisconsin Farm Bureau.

“We are endorsing President Bush because Wisconsin farm families have benefited from his leadership. His support of initiatives in the state has helped agriculture grow to be a $51 billion part of Wisconsin’s economy,” said Bill Bruins, president of the Farm Bureau, and a dairy producer from Waupun.

“President Bush’s leadership on farm programs, animal identification, conservation programs, tax relief, renewal energy, and market development best complements the agricultural initiatives being pursued in Wisconsin.”

“We believe President Bush is the best choice for Wisconsin farm families to expand market opportunities, hold the line on taxes, and provide sensible leadership on environmental rules. We recognize the importance of having a President with initiatives that are the most favorable and consistent with the economic development efforts being undertaken by agricultural leaders in the state,” said Bruins.

The Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation listed these positions and initiatives of President Bush as complimenting the future of agriculture in Wisconsin: 

• Expressed his desire to work with Congress and support for extension of the MILC (Milk Income Loss Contract) program through 2007.
• Not continued regional dairy compacts.
• Provided $2.75 million for the Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium’s to implement a premise identification system and develop an animal identification system.
• Signed the Freedom to Farm Act which:
  • Established the MILC program which returned $413 million to Wisconsin farmers.
  • Established counter-cyclical income loss program which returned $208 million to crop producers.
  • Provided funds for the EQUIP (Environmental Quality Incentive Program) and two pilot projects under the Conservation Security Program.
• Supports the elimination of the death tax on farmers.
• Maintained an economic policy that has kept interest rates low.
• Established health savings accounts as a tax incentive for independent businesses to purchase health insurance.
• Supports the JOBS Act recently passed by Congress that provides ethanol production incentives, and reduces tariffs on U.S. agricultural exports.
• Supports upgrade of lock and dams on the Upper Mississippi and Illinois Rivers to improve transportation efficiency for grain producers.
