Jobless Claims Dip; Labor Recovery Growing
AP ^

Posted on 10/21/2004 6:06:36 AM PDT by deep

WASHINGTON - The number of new people signing up for jobless benefits fell sharply last week, offering a dose of encouraging news that the recovery in the labor market may be strengthening a bit.

The Labor Department (news - web sites) reported Thursday that new filings for unemployment insurance declined by a seasonally adjusted 25,000 to 329,000 for the week ending Oct. 16. That marked the lowest level since early September. In the prior week, claims had climbed by 16,000.

The latest snapshot of the layoffs climate was better than economists were expecting. They were forecasting claims to total in the 345,000 range.

The more stable, four-week moving average of claims, which smooths out week-to-week fluctuations, decreased by 5,500 last week to 348,250, the best showing since late September.

Notice how the MSM keeps referring to the economy as the 'RECOVERY'. Since the GDP is clicking along at an unsustainable 4.8% I wonder what the economy would be referred to right now if President Gore were ruining(hehe) for reelection -- food for thought.

"I wonder what the economy would be referred to right now if President Gore were ruining(hehe) for reelection"

The MSM would be calling it a "mild recession" as it would be in a deep depression due to the Gore policies.

The President saved this country from certain economic disaster and all the Democrat shills can do is complain that it wasn't enough... After the Recession, 9/11 and corporate scandals we should be thanking the President becasue we aren't standing in Bread lines...

Kerry voters are ungrateful for what they have...

I hope they realize that if Kerry gets in office once he repeals the Bush tax cuts that if they work for a small business or a big business that used the tax incentive to hire that they are going to get laid off, and as soon as Kerry cuts all the government contractors 100,000 by his account that if they work for any of the government contractors or are a contractor themselves they will be getting fired and then when Kerry cuts our oustsourcing of jobs overseas that all of the companies that insource jobs to America will be looking to close those loopholes too and well if you work for one of those your job is in jeopardy. Now in order to keep his promise to Ohio he may bring back some manufacturing jobs but I guess the rest of America will have to move to Ohio to get one...

Bottom line the only candidate talking about cutting jobs to create jobs is John Kerry.. The only candidate talking about increasing the size of the military and the potentials of a Draft is John Kerry... The only candidate talking about cutting social security benefits with no plan to make it solvent is John Kerry... The only candidate talking about retreat and defeat in Iraq is John Kerry, the only candidate talking about terrorism being a nuisance is John Kerry...

Unfortunately my wife was one who filed. Bank of America closed her department. She lost her job after 31.5 years with the bank. Now, at age 58, she starts over.

"HE ALONE LOST MORE JOBS THAN ANY OTHER PRESIDENT IN 72 YEARS." -- ho Chi minh Kerry during second debate in St. Louis.

US to lose more than 400,000 jobs this year
Hindustan Times ^ | Saturday, October 16, 2004 | Press Trust of India

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use.

Washington, October 16 -- The United States will lose more than 400,000 jobs this year to India, Mexico, China, and other Asian nations as multinational corporations restructure operations and shift production overseas, according to a study.

The number of jobs lost will be around double those three years ago, according to the study by Cornell University and the University of Massachusetts for the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission.

The study came amid heated debate ahead of the November 2 presidential elections on outsourcing of jobs to India, China and other developing economies and its adverse impacts on employment at home.

White House aspirant Senator John Kerry has vowed to plug tax loopholes to discourage companies from moving their operations abroad to check unemployment, if he unseats George Bush.

The study released on Friday, projected that nearly 100,000 jobs would move to China in 2004 based on extrapolating data collected between January and March 2004.

"These data suggest that in 2004 as many as 406,000 jobs will be shifted from the US to other countries compared to 204,000 jobs in 2001," of which nearly a quarter will go to China, it said.

Production shifts with consequent employment loss had spread across the US economy and now affect sophisticated manufacturing industries, services, and information technology.

These things are a blessing sometimes. My wife and I were both unemployed for two years when the telecom bubble bust. We went back to school and both have better jobs than we've ever had before. Hang in there. You'll have lots of people praying for you, and a good President working for you.

Sorry for your situation. My wife had the same thing happen with her employer -- a business unit that was sold from Verizon to General Dynamics (GD bought it in order to eliminate a competitor for one of their divisions) and then was shut down after transferring all the projects from their office to one in Massachussetts. I'm sure you are not blaming this business decision of BofA on W just like I didn't blame our situation on clinton.

No, we don't blame the President. One of the foul mouthed socialist in our office made that comment. It took me 2 seconds to tell him where to stick it.

We just did not like how they lied to her and her people. They came face to face with them and told them nothing was happening to their department, all was fine, soldier on, keep your heads high, we are growing, going places, next week in conference call, boom! The rumor had been they were only closing my wife's department in Seattle and maybe the Jacksonville, FLA office; but they closed all. Seattle, J'Ville, L.A., Chicago, and Atlanta. Part of BA's 4,500 people layoff. They simply could have told them the truth in the beginning and not lied. That made the people feel better and then boom. In fact, my wife said that her counterpart in the J'Ville office had told her husband all was well, and they made a financial decision based off that and then boom! So, they were particularly damaged by the lies. The butt-holes could simply tell the truth. That would not have choked them too bad. Or, just kept their lying mouths SHUT, and said nothing.

Telecom???? Me too....I'm collecting unemployment since
June and considered "retired" from my
former telecom company (20 years).....The problem with
finding a decent job is that employers don't want to
pay you what your worth so you have to settle for an
$8.00 an hour salary.....I certainly don't blame Bush
for this....My ex company had poor/greedy mis-management that laid off thousands of good dedicated workers...I'm
looking everyday for a decent job and I'm not going to settle for less:0)

Jobless Claims Dip

Damn!! I work too many hours. I can't read headlines properly after two Guiness Stouts.

I thought the headline meant that some unemployed person came up with a recipe for a new Clam Dip.
