David Warren: Letter to USA, I (Above-average David Warren op/ed)
The Ottawa Citizen ^ | October 20, 2004 | David Warren

Posted on 10/20/2004 6:22:02 PM PDT by quidnunc

The Americans go to the polls this year on All Souls, which is Nov. 2nd — two weeks from yesterday. I can't think of a more appropriate day in the ancient Christian calendar. On All Souls we traditionally lit our candles, and carried them into our ancient cemeteries, and set them down by the graves of our forefathers. A reminder that democracy is the tyranny of the living, who vote not only on their own behalf, but also for the dead, and the unborn.

The Americans also vote on behalf of the whole world — living, dead, unborn, — for such is the power of the U.S. in the contemporary world, that we must all, from Ottawa to Harare to Rio to Seoul to Warsaw to remotest Darfur in Sudan, live with the consequences of what Americans decide. I am a Canadian, but that American election is more significant to my future than was our recent Canadian election.

They are their brother's keeper, whether they wish it or not. Many Americans would dearly love not to have to make the tough decisions that go with being the world's present "hyperpower". But I am glad they are stuck with it. For all their flaws, they have proved through decades of real power a remarkably generous people; much short of sanctity as we all fall short. Imagine had communist Russia or China, an Islamist Persia, a fascist Germany or Japan, had the U.S. near-monopoly on "force projection".

Some of the best opinion threads on FR begin with a pair of pro-American Canadians: David Warren and Mark Steyn.

They both have the gift of seeing clearly. Which they communicate with wit and clarity.

It certainly reads as a pro-American, pro-Bush article, and is a good read.

However, just once, I would like to read a column by a Canadian that said "We need to get up off our A$$es in Canada and sacrifice whatever it takes to win the War on Terror. Then we need to remain standing and reestablish ourselves as a country that matters in the world."

Praise for the U.S. being a responsible world power is nice, but we didn't just become a world power, it took years of work, sweat, tears, money and lives to achieve what we have.

I personally want to look north (and south) and see countries who are standing tall, sacrificing their own materials and human lives, as they work with us to protect Freedom and Democracy.

Spending time admiring our grit and determination, while postulating some sort of "there can only be one world superpower" argument that justifies the "let America do it, it's their responsibility as the only superpower" position just isn't taking enough responsibility.

You mean like John Kerry, the Clintons and such. Americans are just as screwed up as we are.
There are a great number of canadian conservatives who just get on with their lives. Politics here is a trivial pursuit (a game developed in Ontario).

If you think my post was an attack on Canadian conservatives, or a defense of John Kerry, et. al., you apparently missed the intent of my post.

I simply stated that I want to see some angry, fire-breathing, hell-raising, "let's roll, and let's kick some leftist Canadian butt and get this country back where it belongs" columns from Canadians.

In such a column, if the author then wanted to add something like "Americans are a superpower and we want to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with them to protect Freedom and Democracy", that would be a fine adjunct, but the focus would be looking internally at Canada.

Maybe I'll never see it, but I can still wish for it (and I'd also like to see the same in Mexico, and other North/South American countries.

P.S. My heartfelt condolences (as I have posted in the past on other threads) go out to the Canadian Conservatives. I well remember the pain and frustration we endured here in the U.S. under the Clinton crime organization.

May God Bless all Canadian Conservatives in their efforts to get out from under the left-wing cabal currently running Canada.

However, I must argue with one of your post's points, and I believe it segues into my original post. In today's world, I don't believe politics can be a trivial pursuit, nor can Conservatives just get on with their lives. The liberals must be pounded every day, and in every way possible.

Best to you and yours.
