No Evidence of 2000 Voter Intimidation
FoxNews ^ | Oct. 15, 2004 | FoxNews

BRIT HUME, HOST: It is an article of faith among Democrats that the 2000 election was stolen from them by the deliberate disenfranchisement of hundred of thousands, if not millions of voters in Florida alone. After the election, the U.S. Civil Rights Commission (search), not noted for having Republican sympathy, conducted an investigation. And what did it find?

Peter Kirsanow (search) is a Republican member of the commission. He joins me now from Cleveland.

Mr. Kirsanow, welcome and thank you for joining us.

PETER KIRSANOW, CIVIL RIGHTS COMMISSION: Thank you.

HUME: Tell me about the Civil Rights Commission's inquiries into Florida 2000.

KIRSANOW: It was a six-month investigation into a number of allegations pertaining to: voter intimidation, harassment, and disenfranchisement, much of which was alleged to have been intentional. In addition, activists had claimed that dogs and hoses were being used to prevent blacks from going to the polls and casting a vote.

It was a fairly intensive investigation. And what it revealed was that thousands of ballots were, in fact, spoiled by voters. But there was no evidence whatsoever of: voter intimidation, any voter does enfranchisement, intentional or harassment. Mistakes were made mainly by voters and there were some glitches in the balloting. But allegations or insinuations that there was somehow some type of sinister effort to disenfranchise people is absolutely false.

A demonstration that the number of panhandle voters who were disuaded from going to the polls by the early calls by the networks, saying Florida was "decided" BEFORE the polls closed (about 3% of registered
voters there) numbered about 16,000 is here: http://www.mclaughlinonline.com/newspoll/np2001/001206panh.htm  - with analysis at

Not a surprising result, but less useful to the Democrats.

They are using this lie to justify shady practices of their own, not that they need any justification. If this election is really close we will have problems.

I have seen the interviews with Kirsanow.

His statements prove the democrat myths wrong.

The only problem areas where in areas run by democraps.

And there was neither intimidation...nor disenfranchisement.

I won't be close. Bush has broken the 50% mark among catholic voters, and doubled his support from 2000 among Jews and Black voters. The polls can say whatever, but it will be 55 - 45 or better for Bush. If Kerry drops under 40 it will be a 400 EV blowout. More mud on the face of the backwater media.

Which is why Kerry himself is pleading with supporters to vote early. He needs to lock in their vote before momentum - or another Swift Boat Veterans for Truth ad - changes their vote to GWB!

THE GENTLEMAN WAS BLACK!!

Extremely well spoken - very intelligent. I was impressed. He was not at all moved by what dems said about what happened there and openly said that most of the problems were in DEMOCRAT DISTRICTS.

...but since Democrats are whiny losers, they inveted the accusation so that they could better deal with the fact that NO ONE LIKES THEM.

HUME: And in terms of people who might have been eligible, who were excluded because they were mistakenly on the list — last question, quickly. Roughly how many, do you know?

KIRSANOW: Don't know that. That is difficult to ascertain. There's probably...

HUME: Are we talking about hundreds or thousands, tens of thousands?

KIRSANOW: Probably in the hundred's.

I wonder why they can be more definitive about this.

Click the picture & goto "last" for the latest on Vote Fraud:

Among these many links is information about ACORN, ACT, Project Vote, PIGRIM, and other shadowy "activist" groups who have a long & sordid history behind the scenes.

I suggest you take these people very, very seriously- remember how the Left practices Projection?

When they scream about "disenfranchisement" on TV, it's a dodge around the fact that they, and their proxies like ACORN, are already disenfranchising you...

If your point is that the Civil Rights Commission DID NOT ADDRESS THE ISSUE OF FELON PURGING, then your reference is useful, since the word felon does not appear in that document in any way related to that question.

However, I want to know why the Miami Herald, for instance, was able to determine that roughly 6,500 felons voted [in spite of the attempt to purge them], but no one can give a decent estimate of incorrectly purged non-felons["probably in the hundreds" doesn't cut it].

Let me be clear. I am attempting to get a handle on actual numbers here to help refute the non-felon purging myth.

"[73] It is important to note that this investigation did not include an examination of the rates of ineligible voters who did vote on Election Day as compared with eligible voters in Florida who were prevented from voting in this election. The scope of the investigation focused on allegations that eligible persons were denied the right to vote by errant policies and practices. The Commission heard sworn testimony and received subpoenaed documents that provided detailed information about these policies and practices. The Commission did not receive adequate information about allegations that felons ineligible to vote voted in the election to present any conclusions, findings, or recommendations about the issue into this report." -- from http://www.usccr.gov/pubs/vote2000/report/ch1.htm#_ftn73

"In practice, this places the burden on voters to prove that they are incorrectly placed on the purge list. Mr. Leahy’s office sends a notice to the individuals requiring them to inform the office if they were improperly placed on the list.[76]

Many people appear on the list incorrectly.[77] For example, in the 2000 election, the supervisor of elections office for Miami-Dade received two lists—one in June 1999 and another in January 2000—from which his office identified persons to be removed from the voter rolls. Of the 5,762 persons on the June 1999 list, 327 successfully appealed and, therefore, remained on the voter rolls (see table 1-4). Another 485 names were later identified as persons who either had their rights restored or who should not have been on the list." -- from http://www.usccr.gov/pubs/vote2000/report/ch1.htm (scroll down to IMPACT OF PURGE LIST)

Sorry, I'm too tired to analyze.

Thanks for the reference. This would seem to indicate that in Miami-Dade county alone, there were 485 people who were incorrectly purged from the roles, did not appeal, and could not have voted had they chosen to. Of course, that is only an interpretation of the statement.

Right. OR it could be that 484 people had their rights restored and 1 who did not. It's probably somewhere in between. At least there's a procedure in place to notify whoever's on the list.
