Google founders on hiring trip to India
Sydney Morning Herald, SMH.Com (Australia) ^ | October 14, 2004 | Associated Press

Google Inc founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin have said that some new features on the world's top search engine and other services will come from its research centre in the southern Indian city of Bangalore, where they are on a hiring spree.

"One approach we are taking is that Bangalore is where we run a mirror exactly of what we have in the United States in terms of development," Brin told reporters in Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka state.

Page and Brin said they were visiting India looking for "extraordinary talented entrepreneurial people who want to make a big change in the world."

Researchers in Bangalore will work with their counterparts in Google's US offices to conceptualise new services and develop software, they said.

This includes developing search engines that will present results based on speech input or drawings, ones that will work in more languages than at present, personalising search results to suit individual preferences, and new features for Google's new email service, they said. Google set up offices in the southern Indian cities of Bangalore and Hyderabad earlier this year. Brin said Google was in fact "too late" in tapping Indian talent.

"We would have preferred to do it sooner. But there are only so many things we can do at once. It is a fast growing business," he said.

Their comments came in Bangalore, their third stop in India, after New Delhi and Hyderabad earlier this week.

Google, based in Mountain View, California, runs an Internet business that revolves around its search engine - which covers 4.3 billion Web pages.

During their low-key visit, the two shopped in New Delhi's Connaught Place, rode in a three-wheel motorised rickshaw in Hyderabad and spent time like a "couple of sophomore backpackers doing India," the Times of India said.

They also called on Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam.

Krishna Bharat, who created Google's news service, is now busy hiring in Bangalore. "We don't have a cap (on how many to hire). We will take in as many people as we can, if they meet our global standards," he said. © 2004 AP

Do we really think Kerry will "punish" companies like Google for outsourcing?

They (Page and Brin) don't seem to care, why should the outsourced, job deprived Middle Class worker care?

Is this outsourceing? They are not shutting down anything here, just adding over there.

And as far as I can remember they have ALWAYS has the "We Are Hireing sign hanging out on thier site:
http://www.google.com/jobs/index.html
but can't find enough qualified people. Maybe they pay too low, but that's not what I hear.

They're not looking for hack programmers.

Knowing what Google is like, they're probably looking for PhDs in CompSci with postdoctoral research and business experience. These guys are already working for 30-40 lakh in India. To get them to join up, they'll probably have to offer them 40-50 lakh, plus stock options.

This is still cheaper than the US, where guys like that would cost $200K+, but it's not really outsourcing to save money. They have just managed to round up all the guys like this they could get their hands on in the US, and are looking for fresh sources.

The problem isn't how cheap people will work, its because there aren't qualified people in America. Americans seem unable or unwilling to master engineering or other technical skills.

Where did you get that? Just make it up on the spot?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that convert to 50,000.00 INR India Rupees = 1,090.87 USD United States Dollars ?

Do they owe you a job, because you are a "degreed pro"? Do they owe you anything?

Bunk. There are many thousands of highly qualified Americans with many years of experience who are being bypassed by cheap overseas labor. The situation will come back into balance when, and only when, America reduces its standards and lifestyle to match those of India and China.

i have no prob with a busness acting in its own interest.
and since we are driving busness out by over regulation, law suits, heavy taxation, etc...everyday we keep adding another shackle to our own busnesses. DO we not think there would be repercussions for our own stupidity? Do we blame water running downhill for taking the path of least resistance? No

A lakh is 100,000 rupees. At 45.5 rupees to the dollar, the salary range I have indicated is about $88-110 USD.

It is, of course, much high than a corporate application programmer would get, which would be about 10-15 lakh. A top graduate of IIT, with several years of experience, might end up working for Oracle or Microsoft for 20-30 lakh, but he would be developing system software.

Many people are surprised at the high salaries that skilled workers get in India. It's just a matter of supply and demand. Good, experienced people are valuable everywhere, and the software boom has left shortages. If you don't want to pay the freight, you can always hire 'programmers' from six-week storefront training schools.

I can still still get call center operators with a BA from a good school, and nice spoken and written English skills, for 1.5-2.5 lakh. That's only about 30% more than the schlock places pay for dummies with a thick accent.
