All N. Korean Guard Dogs at DMZ Relocated to Sino-N. Korean Border

To Prevent N. Korean Escapees

Kang Chol-hwan
Date: 10/15/2004

N. Korean Authorities relocated to Sino-N. Korean border all military guard dogs from Civilian Affairs Police Unit at DMZ, in order to prevent N. Korean defection (at the Sino-N. Korean border.)

Credible Chinese source on N. Korea relayed to us, "Since last month, two guard dogs were allocated to each squad of border guard units. Each company is provided with 10 guard dogs."

He went on to say, "The newly deployed guard dogs used to guard DMZ. They were relocated to Sino-N. Korean border on the order of Military Commission(chairman: Kim Jong-il.) Even some dogs guarding sea shores were sent to the border."

N. Korean authorities felt that troops alone may not be able to deter N. Korean escapees. That is why they deployed guard dogs from DMZ to Sino-N. Korean border.

An ethnic Korean in China was told by PLA personnel, "This measure was taken after close discussion between Chinese border guard units and N. Korean authorities. Both agreed in principle to cooperate to stem the tide of N. Korean escapees. Chinese would provide all Dog feed N. Koreans need."

At custom checkpoint at Sanhai and Kaishantun, located at Chinese side of the border which are across Tumen river from N. Korea, dog feed for military guard dogs are passing through once a week, in addition to food.

A N. Korean escapee who cross the border recently complained that, since small noise gets dogs barking even in the middle of night, leading to capture by soldiers, escape is nearly impossible unless you work things out with soldiers.

They seem rather desperate. Anyhow, DMZ is dog-free. N. Korean military is now split between two borders, the Northern border with China, and the Sourthern border with S. Korea. They have never had to deal with security threats from both directions. Things are not going well. I heard that China cut down on their food aid to N. Korea for several months. As a result, many of their troops are starving now.

Sounds like NK is preparing for a nation-wide prison escape before the winter.

Sounds like China's skill at convencing the NK to stop producing Nukes is becoming more forceful, recently China moved lots more troops to the boarder of NK.

The Chinese are providing dog food. Wonder how many of the dogs will starve because their food is taken?

My bet is that a great many of these dogs now reside in the Korean digestive systems.

I have read the largest threat N.Korea poses to China is millions of starving N.Koreans flooding into China.

Re #8

That pales in comparison with all non-nuclear neighbor of China going nuclear, especially Taiwan and Japan.

Curious. Presumably the dogs ate down at the DMZ too so it sounds like the food from the Chinese was a bribe to relocate the dogs to their border.

Sounds like they sent in winter rations "on the paw".

Actually, considering recent accounts of food desperation up north, dog would be a delicacy to any pallet -- expect animal rights activists to take an issue with this before anyone else. Who knows, if Kerry is elected, we may even go to war over this.
