MONTREAL - A gay man who was called a "fifi" by a used car salesman has been awarded $1,000 by Quebec's Human Rights Tribunal.
The man's name can't be revealed because of a publication ban.
The man told the judge he felt dehumanized, humiliated and degraded by the comment, which happened in November 2001 at Roger Poirier Automobile in Sorel, about 70 kilometres northeast of Montreal.
The salesman, Marcel Bardier, used "discriminatory words in regard to [the complainant], by revealing his sexual orientation in hurtful and vexatious terms," wrote Judge Michele Pauze in her decision, according to the Montreal Gazette.
"Calling someone a `fifi' constitutes a scornful way of referring to homosexuals. The use of this term wounds and adds to the disgrace and lack of respect of human dignity a person [can suffer], homosexuals in particular."
In addition to the $1,000 in "moral damages," the car salesman and his employer must also pay interest and expenses.

Guess I'll just have to be sued since no one cares that my morals and dignity are offended by these broken folk.

Zorro is a perfect name for a cat - especially if he isn't de-clawed.
Our boxer's name is Roxy - great dog, never barks, wouldn't harm a flea - no little dog (Edwards littlehands) insecurities.
You are right for the wrong reason. In Montreal, the store sign would need to be in French. "Fruit Stand" is a combination of two English words, so it would be clearly illegal.
Unforunately Zorro is declawed :( I think he's never really recovered from it, as a male he I think feels a bit de-masculanized, I wouldn't do it again...
Roxy is a cool name last dog I had was "ernie" a great Golden Retreiver...
I think animals tend to act like there names maybe that's why Poodles are called Fifi's

Thanks a lot. I just got done with some stupid harassment law training class ten minutes ago and then have to read about some stupid lawsuit by some thin skinned canadian mad because hewas called fifi.
I just about spweed pizza on my keyboard. Laughing so hard my Ashtma is kicking in.
And if the gay man had called a straight person a "breeder", I am sure there would have been similar compensation for the straight person.
