Annan urges China to play bigger role in int'l peacekeeping operations

BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhuanet)-- The world will be looking to China to take a more direct part in the peacekeeping and other operations mounted by the international community, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Tuesday.

These measures should end to conflicts and help wartorn countries to rebuild their societies, Annan said when visiting the newly-built China Peacekeeping Civilian Police Training Center near Beijing.

Welcoming China's declared intention to be more actively involved in peacekeeping missions, Annan said China's increased participation would "add an important new dimension."

Annan said China, as permanent member of the UN Security Council, has always played a "central role" in the international community's response to threats against international peace and security.

China has understood that its interests, like those of all countries, are increasingly global, not only in terms of trade anddevelopment, but also in fighting international crime and terrorism, said Annan.

"Each such operations responds to a desperate need. And today, we face a surge in demand," said Annan, adding "Another 30,000 uniformed personnel may be required, on top of 50,000 already in the field. We will probably go beyond the peak in numbers of personnel that we reached in the early 1990s."

It is clear that China has the capability to provide many of the resources needed in peace operations.

"Your military is well-equipped and well-trained. Chinese hospitals provide excellent medical support. Your engineers are also highly proficient," Annan said.

So far, China has assigned a total of 297 Chinese peacekeeping police officers to East Timor, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Liberia, Afghanistan, Kosovo and Haiti. Now 92 Chinese police officers remain in five UN peacekeeping operations.

Annan arrived here Saturday for a five-day official visit to China at the invitation of the Chinese government. This is his sixth visit to the country as UN chief. Enditem

UN Secretary-General in Beijing to Discuss Human Rights, Iraq

Secretary-General Kofi Annan is in China, where he is holding discussions on issues including China's participation in a meeting on Iraqi security next month.

China expects to participate in the international conference on Iraq, scheduled in Egypt next month.

China was among the leading opponents of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq last year.

Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing said Beijing believes the meeting is necessary to bring peace to the country. He said violence in Iraq after the U.S.-led invasion "threatens world peace."

Mr. Annan said his discussion with the Chinese also touched on other subjects, including the situations in Sudan and in Afghanistan.

"A lot of us have known for some time there was something wrong in the world but it was difficult to pin down and put our fingers on. It was something that has no face and no name. Like fog it swirled all around us but not being corporeal we lashed out in all directions, landing blows on nothing. It was like an itch we could never scratch." We used to call these people "the left," and still do I suppose, but many of those pushing this apparently "left-wing" agenda seem to be high-level statesmen, the wealthy and the heads of multibillion-dollar corporations"- David Carr (.pdf - 60 sec. download )

LOL! We spent some time in China a few years ago when hubby was there on a work assignment. Enough time to see the condemned prisoners whisked straight from the so-called trial in the back of a pick-up truck, sirens blaring, driven to a public stadium to be executed in public (firing squad).

Yeah, Chinese peace-keeping troops...that could get interesting!

Just another reflection of the pandering of Annan in his ongoing game with the U.N. -- yes, Communist Chinese peace keepers...kinda like Joseph Stalin heading up peace operations in Russia......

The U.N. has degenerated into a swamp of the world's worst criminals...with the PRC near the list top -- of course they were against invading Iraq...a good friend and like the type of nations they like...of little threat to them. Why do you think the PRC does not like us??? -- because we are their biggest threat to world domination....

Bill Frist is my Senator. I am sending him an email suggesting that Senate Bill number one in the next Congress be to "dis-invite" the United Nations from the United States as the hosting country. I will suggest that they move their headquarters to, oh, Beijing, or maybe Damascus, or even Jenin. Let's see how much they squeal.

Russia and China are having a meeting and the UN is there.

Why do I feel like they are talking about us and that they will not say nice things about us.
