ABC's memo problem
Washington Times ^ | Tuesday, October 12, 2004

Three weeks before the election, ABC News Political Director Mark Halperin apparently doesn't think the campaign season is going too well. He thinks ABC News must help the electorate by sorting out the relevant facts from the spin; holding the liars accountable; and openly campaign for the election of John Kerry — stuff like that. Mr. Halperin issued these instructions to ABC News employees last week in a memo, which was subsequently leaked to Internet news-guru Matt Drudge just before Friday night's second presidential debate. ABC News' Charles Gibson, coincidentally, moderated the debate.

Hi John,

And the thing that really got me was they had the nerve to put Halpern on the Sunday panel of George Steph's show.

It seemed to me that they were not even disturbed by the revelation, and in fact, chose to flaunt their bias by having him on the panel.

G'morning, my friend.

It seemed to me that they were not even disturbed by the revelation, and in fact, chose to flaunt their bias by having him on the panel.

Exactly. And they wonder why their ratings are in a death spiral.

I don't watch ABC so I can't evaluate whether Halperin's memo will have any impact. It sounded to me like he was reacting to something specific. Did some reporter stray from the message and reveal one of Kerry's "distortions"?

Have you seen the "Slant-O-Meter" on the coverage of the last two debates? Surprise! Networks were significantly skewed toward positive coverage of Kerry, while cable networks were only a little pro-Kerry.

One other point. It's not enough to label them "liberal media." They're PARTISAN liberal media.

The pattern is becoming clear. The arrogant and persistent bias is becoming increasingly clear to "moderates" (read not that involved nor informed) and they are looking for alternatives. Sooo, thinking swiftly, Fox News steps into the breach and says "Hey, we're gonna start serving a little more of the same crap you moderates are kinda used to - just to make you more comfortable", while elbowing the conservatives that built them off to the side.

Well sorry, Folx (mispelled pun intentional), but this ain't yer Daddy's Goebbel's MSM anymore. This is now the Blogosphere - and we will steadily erode your ratings too - such that you may indeed join the MSM that you have lately been going through caseloads of "Scope" to be a part of - straight onto the ash-heap of media history.

A Pew Research Center and Project on Excellence in Journalism released a report over the summer that found 34 percent of national journalists identified themselves as liberal, while just seven percent said they were conservative.

The remaining 59%, I guess, were Progressives.
