So, this means we are all African-Americans?

No, that's reserved for people like Pickles Heinz-Kerry. Personally, I'm holding out to be an illegal Mexican, the benefits are better.

The Toba issue keeps coming up, but it is never explained why only HUMAN populations bottlenecked while chimps, bonobos, gorillas, lemurs and all other primate populations stayed diverse. Until this is explained, I can't accept that TOBA bottlenecked the human population. If the numbers in this study are adjusted to fit what we know about the Amerindians, then there were no humans around before TOBA anyway.

I agree with you regarding the purported "Toba bottleneck".

You're welcome, and if you're on the GGG pinglist, sorry for the recent spike in volume. I think Karl Rove is behind it, or maybe Halliburton. ;')

"Have you ever seen the gentic bottle neck and defect results from even a small population of say 10 or 20 individual interbreeding? Eventually infertility sets in and the population dies off. This is true of most higher animals: tigers, humans, apes, etc."

I'm not the one saying it; it's these scientists.

The scientists are talking of an initial population of 1500 breeding adults (around 3,000 kids). That's not a genetic bottleneck. 2 would be a massive genetic bottleneck and a sure sign of extinction. Oh, and on the Biblical side of things, if you take the literal interpretation, who did Caine marry? God gave him a woman, from where? Or was she also created?

Just as speculation, imagine that modern man had finally been derived from the line that comes through australopithecus, homo erectus, et. cetera. Having prepared his vessel, God then ensouled the first man and woman. Their children married unensouled men and women, but the children of those unions had souls. It would model like a genetic trait with a 100% expression rate.

Pure speculation, of course, but it reconciles both Genesis and paleoanthropology.
