CNN: Bush Mantains Electoral College Lead (Bush 301, Kerry 237)

President Bush headed into his second debate with John Kerry Friday night holding a sizable lead in the all-important race for electoral votes, but Kerry has made big gains this week in seven battleground states, a new CNN survey suggests.

If the election were held today, Bush likely would win 301 electoral votes to Kerry's 237, according to a new CNN survey based on state polling as well as interviews with campaign aides and independent analysts. A candidate wins the election with at least 270 electoral votes, regardless of the popular vote.

Bush's margin appears unchanged from last week. Boosted by his performance in the Miami, Florida, debate and new questions about Bush's rationale for invading Iraq, however, Kerry looks as if he is threatening the president's lead in New Hampshire, New Mexico, Wisconsin, Ohio, Florida, Colorado and Iowa, which hold a total of 82 electoral votes. If Kerry picks up Ohio and Florida, he would lead Bush in the Electoral College, 285 to 253.

New polls suggest Kerry has also opened up solid leads in two Democratic-leaning states where Bush had been threatening the senator's edge: Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

This could be a setup as well....CNN reports in 3 days that NM, Iowa, Ohio and NH have all switched over to the Kerry campaign and it's over for Bush.

Remember....POLLS are nothing more than expectation games...when the people start to lose confidence in any one candidate because their "neighbors" are questioning him...well they try to lead the public with polls...

I don't think it's all off-base..but really they have given a lot of room for "movement" in their guys favor.

I have the election currently pegged exactly as shown by CNN at this "moment".

Although my polling expertise is rather limited, I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night!

Not to worry. Hill will be on tv to spin the debate for Kerry afterward. The last time she did this for Kerry, she mentioned his name once.

Well the debate tonight shuld help both candidates. Bush held his own while not beating Kerry. Kerry mastered all the numbers again but seemed stuck on flips and tax cuts. The electoral votes in certain states show a bit lower than CNN with realclearpolitics having Bush at 264. If Bush can win one state and hold his own where he is not expected to win, he could stil squeeze out this victory. I am afraid that attacking the Prez has helped more for Kerry than Bush trying to explain what his Adm. had done in 4 years. It will be a squeaker.

The state has been moving rightward for the last 10-12 years, electing a Republican-controlled House and closing a huge gap in the state Senate.

Minnesota hasn't seen a Democrat governor in years, and the current Republican governor is a man of strong conservative principles.

But, I think the most telling indicator of a sea change in this state is repeated campaign stops by the Bush team, particularly in northeastern Minnesota, once known as "the Red Eighth (District)."

John Kerry was painted as a liberal last night, one who was really against the war, before he voted for it; one who was for the military spending bill, before he voted against it;One who is for cutting taxes, after over 20 years in the senate voting for tax increases.
