Bush, Cheney Left Off Mo. County Ballots

VAN BUREN, Mo. - Officials in one Missouri county are reprinting absentee ballots for the Nov. 2 general election after discovering that President Bush (news - web sites) and Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) were left off.

The ballots were mailed beginning Sept. 21, and Carter County Clerk Becky Gibbs said several voters noticed the oversight.

"We are rectifying it," she said. "There was no intent to leave them off."

Fewer than 500 of the erroneous ballots were sent out, and some have already been returned.

Replacement ballots will be sent to everyone who requested an absentee ballot along with a letter explaining the error.

Terri Durdaller, spokeswoman for the Secretary of State, said that if absentee voters who previously returned a ballot send a new one, it will replace the previous one. If they don't return a new ballot, their first one will be counted.

"The key is just to make sure everybody does get the changed ballot," Durdaller said.

Ballots that other voters will use Nov. 2 have not been printed yet.

Gibbs said the cost to print replacement absentee ballots should be minimal.

Is the other one the absentia ballots mailed to the military from Michigan, or is that still another one?

Boy, could I make a killing on EBay with a couple of these. Starting on November 3.

This is an OUTRAGE!! To suggest this was a clerical error or just an unintentional oversight is no excuse. Whoever is the head of that office should be fired immediately no questions asked. G.W. and Cheney are the seated Pres. and V.P. their names should be at the top of the page in boldface, italics in red, underlined with stars surrounding them. No excuse... how do you forget to put the President and Viuce President on a ballot???!! If it`s a joke it`s not funny. and the cost of reprinting the ballots should absolutely not come from taxpayer money, it should come directly from the pocket of those responsible.

'If, for instance, an absentee ballot was returned with a vote for candidates John Kerry and John Edwards and no new ballot is received, that ballot will be used.

"Or if they under-voted and just didn't vote for any presidential ticket and just voted statewide, the ballot would still count," she said.

The cost to reprint the ballots will fall to Carter County, although Gibbs said she doubted the cost would be substantial. Ballots that will be used on the Nov. 2 election date have not been printed yet.

"It probably won't be very much," she said. "We don't really have a lot of absentee voters."

Less than 500 of the ballots without the Bush/Cheney ticket included were sent out. Gibbs said the county usually receives about 300 absentee ballots for each election, although the August primary saw a record number due to the local sheriff's race and the constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

Several voters had noticed their options were limited on the absentee ballots. Gibbs said the county clerk's office began work to correct the situation as soon as it was discovered.

"Somewhere along the line, we noticed it," she said.'

Folks. Van Buren is in the Ozarks, and big time Bush country. Don't go crazy because a small-town county clerk screwed up.

Several voters noticed the oversight?

Give me a break! What kind of voter would not have noticed the "oversight"?

Think I'll trot over to DUmmie land and see how Carl Rove managed to pull this one off.

Yes!! ALL ballots w/out President Bush and VP Cheney should be trashed, new ones should be send to those who have already voted with a letter of explanation and only the corrected ballots should be counted.

I should think the printer (anyone know who that would be) would pay that expense or some small precinct did not proof the ballot.

In Alma, Michigan the printer of the Absentee Ballot leaving no place to vote for Bush/Cheney was Miller Consultants and Elections, Inc., Barry Miller, President. Could it be the same printer?
