WSJ: Rangel's Class War (House votes down the Draft 402-2)
Wall Street Journal ^ | October 6, 2004 | Editorial

Posted on 10/06/2004 5:35:17 AM PDT by OESY

..."There is certainly no one in the Bush Administration who has any idea like that at all," Donald Rumsfeld said Monday. "I don't even believe there's any Republican that I've heard of in the Congress who has that idea." He might have added that the senior military leadership hates the prospect most of all.

But sometimes it takes an act of Congress to kill a politically mischievous rumor. This was the hope yesterday of House Republican leaders, who decided to schedule a vote on the Universal National Service Act, sponsored by New York Democrat Charles Rangel. Under Mr. Rangel's proposed law, "all persons" -- including women -- would be required to perform military or civilian service "in furtherance of national defense and homeland security." Mr. Rangel wants the draft to return because he figures if rich kids from Harvard have to serve with the middle-class kids who dominate the service ranks, then a President would be less likely to go to war.

We went to press too early to see the final floor vote. But in the end even Mr. Rangel was expected to oppose his own bill, calling the Republicans' rush to bring the bill to a vote "a prostitution of the legislative process."

If Mr. Rangel is serious about getting more rich kids into the military, we have a suggestion: Prevail upon Harvard and other elite schools to allow the Reserve Officer Training Corps back on campus.... Making it easier for them to join the military would be a lot easier on everyone than bringing back the draft.

SO Rangel brings a bill and then votes against it.

And then we says it was the Republicans who 'prostituted' the legislative process!

The voters in his district should be ashamed of themselves for electing such a ham-fisted hack.

Only a Democrat could call an early vote on his own bill unfair.

One reason this election is historically important is that it will confirm whether Americans are as dumb as the democrats make them out to be by making such mischief.

Actually, I think Israel has a great idea with their similar idea that everyone must serve in the military for two years. Everyone (men and women) goes through basic training but then the women go into non-combatant roles.

The discipline enforced via the military would do wonders for many in this age group. They would also learn the value of team work. I would much rather see military service than the America Corps perversion.

It wasn't about him getting the message.

If was all about Rangel and the DNC using the legislative process as a political tool for the democrats to use against the administration.

Security moms (aka: grown up soccer moms) are scared to death the WOT will arrive at their doorstep via the "draft"

There are at least two women at work who swear Bush is bringing back the draft after the election and that is their sole reason they are voting for Kerry.

Hopefully this will put this nonsense to bed.

Of course the Democrats will now say the GOP is weak on defense because they failed to pass the measures necessary to protect the USA aka: the draft

Perhaps his House mates will think twice about co-sponsoring another Rangel bill.

[ One reason this election is historically important is that it will confirm whether Americans are as dumb as the democrats make them out to be by making such mischief. ]

You mean how dumb american women are.. Oprah has activated the ditz xote big time.. If Kerry is elected it will be because of american women.. and you're right it could happen and exactly because they are politically dumb urh ignorant.. If Kerry is elected it will prove the founders were precient in not including women in on the vote..

I almost spewed my morning coffee when I heard ABC Radio report this morning that REPUBLICANS brought up this vote to show their united opposition to a draft in the face of Democratic criticisms. No mention at all that this piece of legislation was sponsored by Dems and the only two Representatives voting for it were Dems. What? Did Dan Rather switch networks last night while I slept?

Allow me to correct a common misconception. Nothing in the Constitution ever said who could or could not vote. Is was not viewed as a Federal decision. The qualifications for voters were left entirely to the states to decide. At least one state, New Jersey, at the time of the founding, gave women the vote. Before the 18th amendment passed in the early 20th century, a number of states gave the vote to women. Free blacks were also allowed to vote in a number of states in the early days of the nation before the passage of the 15th amendment after the Civil War.

You can't lay that on the Founders. It was always a state issue.
