Shaky performance (Easley's) in schools debate
Carolina Journal ^ | 10/5/2004 | John Hood

Enjoying a comfortable lead in the polls, Easley should have come into Monday’s education debate, held at SAS Institute in Cary, with little to prove and little interest in making news. But that’s not what happened. The governor came loaded for bear, too loaded in fact, and delivered a performance that seemed to me to be nervous, unresponsive, and out of character. He set the tone with an opening statement that generated the best, make that the worst, sound bite of the day. "If Patrick Ballantine is a champion of education, then Saddam Hussein is a champion of civil rights," Easley joked, though it wasn’t funny.

Reason: Easley is being coached by a Carville Cousin (or at least someone of the same mindset). It was so obvious.

Same attack mode. (Saddam Hussein??? come on, Guv.....)

Same Jr High debate tricks (not stand next to a taller opponent)

Big dfference - unlike President Bush who carries the weight of the world on his shoulders every minute of every day --- Patrick Ballantine was free, feisty, fun, and fantastic!

For others who mnight want to watch and perhaps send contributions to Balantine's campaign - will try to find out if there is a link to a video feed (it is a rerun).

Go Patrick - again!

Should have told Mikey that the Kerry or Edwards would be there, he would have not show up.

There is a box on the lower left side of the stage (as you look at the stage) but I was told it is not a teleprompter. Maybe just a monitor?

Easley wants huge investments in new schools - because he is adding PRE K and POST 12 GRADE!!!!

I wish someone was listening who could tell me about school building contracts. Let me guess - they are all Demonrat huge contributors?

Talking about TESTING - saying it is a disaster. We are 32 or 33 % prof in math and reading. Governor says we are 82% in math and reading. We are 42nd in America in SAT scores.

Ballantine - we were on the right track - now we are not. The testing program is a disgrace.....those are some of the EDUCATION BUREAUCRATS THAT I WOULD GET RID OF......

Hallelujah!!!!

More at Four

Smart Start

Finish Fair

Learn and Earn

How musical..........

Patrick: They got caught turning in false numbers- 37% drop out rate ----- we are going to improve that !

Patrick: I stand with the children, the parents, the teachers and my opponent stands with the bloated education BUREAUCRACY.

We spend over $100 Million a year on local administrators!!!! meanwhile teachers have to spend their own money on basic school supplies like books, paper, pens, pencils, chalk, etc.

Easley took money from Teachers' retirement fund!!!!

Let's see-----that sounds a bit Clintonesque.....

Lottery brought up by Easley - but Patrick not given a chance to respond. But they are going to audience for questions.

(I knew this would not be on WRAL/WTVD/TV17 during prime time. They cannot risk the masses being angered about missing their favorite "TV" show...in order to show them an actual, real debate......between someone who has spent this state into the ground and a relatively young, but experienced (10 years) NC Senator who has great ideas, great energy, and great courage!

Being asked about a $6 Billion bond for local school building......Patrick - I am going to have to look at that but know what I won't do - I won't take money from local communities, from the State Teachers' retirement fund, to do this.....

That "Across the board" three percent cut the Governor says Patrick and "Leo" presented in the "Donnie and Marie kind of thing," was a joint response to Easley's only address to the sate, during the longest General Assembly session in NC history, in 2001.

Leo and atrick responded on statewide V together, and were in close contact about their speech until the taping.

Leo pulled the across the board cut idea out of nowhere, in the studio blindsiding him with an idea, as he said, would have meant cutting fund for local governments.

It was Leo Daughtry's idea, not his, and Easley knew that.

P>You'll love this. That $6 Billion public school needs figure includes reconstruction of every school over 20 years old.

Thanks for the updates. I would be life savings that the people who do the school bonds and who build the schools are heavy Demo party contributors?????? Or even Demo officials themselves???? John Hood would know - can you ask ?
