Reasons to believe [ ...the Red Sox will fold again]
The Boston Globe ^ | October 5, 2004 | By Gordon Edes

So, just why is it that the 2004 Red Sox are so much better equipped to silence the "1918" chants than their immediate predecessors? What is the reason, as Kevin Millar said last weekend, repeating a commonly held belief in the Sox clubhouse, that no one wants to play this team in October?

The only issue to be decided on is who will be the goat of 2004.

This team has improved since losing in 2003 to their perennial bully... the New York Yankee's. They were favored to win it all this year... that is, until the Yankee's got Alex Rodriquez.

Now the oddsmakers in Vegas place both teams as 3-1 favorites to win it all.

But alas, there's the 'Curse of the Bambino' to deal with. No Red Sox team has won the World Series since Babe Ruth, the man who changed the game, was sold to the Yankee's.

Voodoo or not, everytime the Sox get in the playoffs, or for that matter the World Series, one of their own will become a Judas... a 'weak link'... a fly-in-the-ointment... the monkey-in-the-wrench. Even the manager can fit the bill... as last year with Grady Little

But whomever they blame(it's always just one guy) this year, the poor bastard will get his walking papers as a Christmas bonus. It's sooo typically Boston!

If I recall correctly, Pedro ended the season with four consecutive bad outings. Not a good sign.

Yankees ended the regular season kind of perfunctorily. They didn't look particularly impressive. However, the World Series defeats to teams like the Marlins and the Diamondbacks have to be eating at some of them, maybe they will pull it together this year.

I hate the Yankees but I cheer for them against Boston.

Go Yankees!

Having some sizable bets against the Sox might be influencing my opinion

I don't. But I believe in the "Curse of the Hildebeast." The Yanks haven't won a World Series since she was elected to the Senate.

It's a New England tradition to blame others for your problems, and the curse is a perfect example of it. The same people that vote the Kennedy/Kerry ticket really believe in the curse. It's the liberal thought process, total lack of cause and effect.
The New England Patriots are so refreshing compared to the Red Sox. No excuses, just performance.

The Braves and the Astros tied their season series at 3 wins each; I believe the 'Stros scored 23 runs total and the Braves scored 22. Should be an excellent series.

If that holds true till election day in 2006, start a 527 based on that.

If I recall correctly, Pedro ended the season with four consecutive bad outings.

And then he proclaimed "The Yankees are my daddy" and started carrying a midget around with him.

Definitely not good signs.
