RALEIGH, N.C. - President Bush has doubled his lead in the past month over Democratic challenger John Kerry in North Carolina, according to a recent poll.
Voters preferred Bush over Kerry, 50 percent to 44 percent, in a survey conducted for The News & Observer, WRAL-TV and WUNC radio Sept. 20 through 22. Bush led by 3 percentage points in polls taken last month.
The poll, taken by Research 2000, has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
The survey also found that as the war in Iraq and terrorism emerge as the defining issues in the national campaign, North Carolinians remain divided over them.
Slightly more people, 47 percent to 46 percent, said the situation in Iraq "was not worth going to war over." But 49 percent said the war in Iraq made the United States safer from terrorism, while 44 percent said it made the country less safe.
From the beginning, Bush has focused his campaign on Iraq. Now the Democrats, who initially stressed the economy and jobs, have moved to sharp critiques of Bush's handling of the war. And suburban women, a key group of swing voters, show more interest in security questions.
This month, Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards, North Carolina's senior senator, derided Bush's handling of Iraq at a campaign stop in Raleigh. His wife, Elizabeth Edwards, met with military families, veterans and other supporters in Fayetteville, home to Fort Bragg.
Results of another poll of state voters, this one conducted by Elon University, shows that Kerry is having trouble turning war criticism into votes in a state with a strong military presence.
The Elon poll said 51 percent of those surveyed disapproved or strongly disapproved of the way Bush handled the Iraq war. But nearly 40 percent said he had a clear plan for Iraq, while about 24 percent said the same of Kerry.
Bush led Kerry by about 20 percent on questions about who would do a better job responding to an international crisis and leading the war on terror.
The Elon poll was conducted Sept. 20 through 23 and had a margin of error of 4.4 percentage points.
way to help the tickete win your home state, senator edwards!
Awesome!
Now, can he help Burr beat Bowles...that is the important issue...
taking them out one state at a time love it
Did Kerry really think that Edwards would deliver the south? Two idiot men...southerners see through these guys.
The Democrats are blinded by all that lawyer money. They are oblivious to the reality that lawyers are truly hated by many, many Americans.
So what battle ground states are still competative? - oops, sorry, let's pretend we're five points down ...
That's pitiful when you can't win your own state. Is this another example of Kerry's judgment?
It's a lot harder to vote for "anyone but Bush" than people thought when the two John's are such complete idots.
I suppose than when they first thought "anyone but Bush", they didn't expect the democrat party to offer up the two biggest jerks in the entire country.
Jesse Ventura is probably kicking himself for not putting his hat in the ring.
Half the audience who showed up last week to see John Edwards' first South Carolina appearance since he won his home state's primary in February walked out before he arrived two hours late.
The state's Democratic Senate candidate whose campaign the Edwards visit was supposed to boost declined to be seen on the same stage with Edwards. LMAO!!
Inez Tenenbaum (senate hopefull for SC) said she would have skipped the event altogether if John Kerry had been the guest of honor.
As they sat for two hours in the sweltering heat inside the community center, Democratic officials were observed checking their watches and looking irritated.
When state party chairman Joe Erwin opened the door to let some air in, people began to pour out.
NOTHING would tick me off more than sitting in a hot, stuffy building and kept waiting.
It tells people that they are insignificant nothings, not important enough for Edwards to be on time for.
Kiss those votes goodbye.
Then he'd call his mentor Ted Kennedy and ask him what to do.
Edweirds is really helping us in his home state.
Of course he would have lost his senate race if he had run.
Putting this trial lawyer loser on their ticket must have been one of Karl Rove's moves.:)
Wait until the "Bush bump" after the debates! ; )
You're right!
Bush is MUCH farther ahead in NC!
Edwards is a SINO-Southerner In Name Only.
So, will there be a trickle down to the Burr Senate race?
