Bosnia Mass Grave Yields 182 Bodies, More Expected

KEVLJANI, Bosnia - Forensic experts said Friday they had found remains of 182 people, believed to have been wartime prisoners killed by Bosnian Serb forces, in a mass grave in western Bosnia and that they expected to find more.

"So far we have exhumed 182 complete and incomplete bodies," said Jasmin Odobasic, an official of the Commission for Missing Persons of Bosnia's Muslim-Croat federation. "Certainly there are 30-50 more bodies in the grave."

The experts, working since mid-August, dug about five meters down into the mass grave, the second found in the village of Kevljani near the town of Prijedor.

The bottom of the grave, located in the field near houses, was covered with skulls and bones. Remains were placed in white plastic bags on the edges of the hole.

The U.N. investigators unearthed in 1999 the remains of close to 150 people in the first mass grave found in the village. The victims had been detainees in the Serb-run Omarska detention camp, located only a kilometer away.

Early in the 1992-95 Bosnian War, thousands of Bosnian Muslims and Croats were held, killed or tortured in the camps of Omarska, Keraterm and Trnopolje, near Prijedor. Nearly 3,500 people went missing from Prijedor alone, and about 1,000 are still unaccounted for.

Odobasic said that documents found on some bodies in the second Kevljani grave showed that the victims were also Omarska prisoners.

"We have found 20 documents, three of persons of Croat nationality and 17 belonging to persons of Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) nationality, and witnesses said that all of them were detained in Omarska camp," Odobasic told Reuters at the site.

He said that some 4,000 bodies of non-Serbs had been exhumed from 110 mass graves in the wider western Krajina region. Only about half have been identified so far.

About 29,000 people, mostly Muslims, went missing in the war. The remains of around 18,000 have been found -- including about 5,000 of up to 8,000 Muslims killed by Serb forces in Srebrenica in 1995 -- and 10,000 identified.

The Kevljani grave is a so-called secondary mass grave, where remains have been moved from another site to hide evidence of the killings. There were several layers in the grave and it is believed the bodies were dumped there at different times.

Odobasic said that bullets had been found in some 20 bodies. "When we wash the clothes and examine the bones we will have much better clues about the method of execution," he said.

Asim Jakupovic, a former camp inmate, came to the grave site searching for relatives who went missing in Omarska.

"I believe that many of those who went missing from Omarska will be found here," he said.

The bones in the photo look much older than from 9 years ago.

Sorry, Joan. I didn't look that closely at the bones; there was something else in that photo that caught my eye.

No it is OK to murder Christians. Just look at the news blackout of what is going on in Kosovo.

Cohen told all of us that there was over 100,000 in mass graves.

Like Dan Rather covering the forged memos, he'll claim that some people were killed in the war and the Serbs must answer for them all.

What, you were expecting reason from this one?

Wrong war. This is Bosnia, not Kosovo.

We both know this to be a lie

At least one of us knows that the other doesn't know what he's talking about.

With all due respect, Joan, I don't give a sh*t whether they're Serb, Muslim, Croat, Hutu, Bantu, Chinese, Indian, or freepin' flat earth vegetarians. There are hundreds of dead HUMAN BEINGS in the mass grave they found there. HUMAN BEINGS. People. Not 'dirty Turks.' People. Not "cetniks" or "ustasa." PEOPLE.

At some point, the sheer scale of the human tragedy takes over. As a friend of mine said, when you're drowning in a swimming pool full of blood, it doesn't really matter who threw in the first bucketful.

Well said 'Tragic'

First step: stop killing. Second step: seize, arrest or otherwise disable those unwilling to take "step #1." Send them to O'Riely's Alaskan prison island.

Just look at the news blackout of what is going on in Kosovo.

Enlighten me. How many Serbs have been kiled in Kosovo this month? Or in August? Or July? Or in the March "pogrom"? Or for this whole year? And how many Albanians? Do a little digging and then share with us what you find. Be on your Scout's honor & be fair.

Or maybe this picture below is what you're talking about? I haven't seen much about this in the news. You know, Kosovar Albanians killed by Serbs whose bodies were transported to Serbia and buried in mass graves outside Belgrade in an attempt to hide the crime? And now they're being returned to Kosovo 20 or 30 at a time over the past year or so.

Do you want the numbers for the dead Albanian and dead Serbs of Kosovo according to the OSCE prior to the bombing of Kosovo?

The public numbers are sanitized.

Don't forget- many of those same muslims we were protecting were and are Al Qaeda.

The presence of Al Qaeda in the Balkans is much exaggerated when it has not been totally fabricated. Surely with so "many" Al Qaeda in the Balkans and with tens of thousands of U.S. troops there over the past 10 years, there must have been a lot of American casualties, right? Or at least a few? Well how about one? Any? Well, surely there must be some Albanian & Bosniak prisoners at GTMO, right? About the same number as American casualties to Al Qaeda in the Balkans: zero.

You are a victim of the very vociferous Serb nationalist propaganda machine which turns every adversary into a jihadist. They have had some problems doing that to the Catholic Croats, but instead have used the expedient of labelling them as Nazis as though the Ustase was still in charge. Good luck on the Balkans threads!

Right, it was 100,000 in Kosovo. Didn't the Clintonistas claim 250,000 casualties in Bosnia?

James Jatras, a former analyst for the Senate, recently gave testimony concerning al-Qaeda's origins in Bosnia. You can't keep shouting "It's a lie!" at the truth and expect it to go away.

Wake up schmuck. The Christians are fleeing the country for Serbia. Our press doesn't cover it. People like you had us siding with white slaving, drug dealing, Al quada funded Albanians. Why do you think they called them the Kosovo Albanians.

Those links don't really cover your assertions of "many", nor do they explain the absence of attacks on American forces in the Balkans.

You'll note that Iraqis and Afghans hostile to America are doing their fighting at home - there's no reason the Bosnians or Albanians wouldn't do the same, were they so inclined.

Is that the best you can do!!!!!!! I assume this is a picture of graves. How they died I don't know. Are they part of the 200,000 ALBANIANs (not Kosovars) that were supposedly killed by the Serbs. It must be true Dan Rather and you say so! Boy I waited for the mass graves on TV after we liberated the Christian country for the ragheads but I never saw them on TV. Dan Rather didn't have time to cook those up.
