40 Days of Corporate Prayer and Fasting for National Repentance. Sep 24 - Nov 2
CHPA ^ | 23 Sep 04 | Capitol Hill Prayer Alert

Posted on 09/23/2004 7:21:36 PM PDT by SLB

"If my people which are called by My name, will humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

A growing coalition of the Church and community prayer leaders is calling pastors, prayer coordinators, congregations, and networks throughout each state and region to set aside a 40-day period between September 24 and November 2, 2004, for corporate fasting, prayer, repentance and seeking the face of God. Our desire is to “stand in the gap” for our communities, regions, states, and nation as it passes through a time of war and another critical national election. Various churches and prayer groups will begin with all-night prayer on September 24, which is also the eve of Yom Kippur. Some individuals are feeling called to 40-day or other protracted fasting. Some churches and networks are planning 24/7 “tag-team” prayer watching and fasting, individual by individual or household by household. Smaller congregations are joining with other churches in their area in order to maintain the 40-day observance in their region. Prayer Summits and expressions unique to individual denominations, churches, pastors' prayer groups, and ministries are also being orchestrated.

Within each state, county, city and neighborhoods, pastors and congregations are encouraged to yield up their individual Sunday services, preferably on October 10th, in order to join with other local churches at designated sites for a nationwide Solemn Assembly. Community Prayer Watches and joint worship initiatives have taken place in Prince William County , Virginia , near the headquarters of Intercessors For America and other ministries, since 1996. (The collection of tithes and offerings can easily be orchestrated so as to permit each giver to specify their local church) Leaders in some locations might need or want to link to one another via satellite or other means.

The proposed Solemn Assembly would include worship, led by various worship ministries from different churches or participating sites, a time of personal and community repentance, a time of interdenominational and interracial reconciliation, and state and national level repentance. After the time of repentance the assemblies will engage in corporate worship and communion, followed by a time of prayer for our communities, states, nation, and governments, and to call upon God for world-wide revival.

It is hoped that 12:00 noon EDT, or another agreed-upon hour that might be announced, be observed in each continental U.S. time zone. Thus, multitudes of believers will be “in one accord” in actual real time from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast.

There is a more appropriate verse for our nation than the verse usually quoted about repentance:

(Jer 18:7 KJV) At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it;

(Jer 18:8 KJV) If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.

(Jer 18:9 KJV) And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it;

(Jer 18:10 KJV) If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.

I will join in with you as a fasting and prayer partner. I am printing this off to see if my church will consider being a part of this.

Much can be accomplished through fasting and prayer.

I guess only water between sun up and sun down would take a few pounds off.

40 Days of Corporate Prayer and Fasting for National Repentance. Sep 24 - Nov 2

Are these folks aware of the reading of the book of Jonah on Yom Kippur (one would think?), or did they merely notice a 40 day period from the beginning of Yom Kippur to election day?

1 And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying,
2 Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.
3 So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.
4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

Why do we read the Book of Yona on Yom Kippur?

The repentance of the people of Ninveh serves as an inspiration to us to repent, and shows us that repentance can overturn a Divine decree. (Shelah Hakadosh) Also, it teaches that even Yona could not flee from G-d. (Sefer Hatoda'ah)

I've fasted every year on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) for 32 years and I won't miss this year. The Presidential election gives an addition impetus for prayer.

This day has tremendous meaning for the Christian. Read Leviticus 16 and all of the book of Hebrews.

In a nutshell, Jesus came as both a sacrificial Lamb AND as a High Priest and offered His own sacrifice as the Atonement for all mankind on Easter Sunday after He was resurrected. This was pictured annually on the Day of Atonement for 1400 years before He fulfilled it.

I won't go into the possible prophetic meaning of this day, but Revelation 20 gives a clue.

"Anybody want to make book on the "repentance" part?"

Not really, however, I think about Abraham asking the Heavenly Father "Preadventure there be fifty righteous within the city, forty five, forty, thirty, twenty, ten, "and He said "I will not destroy it for ten's sake."

No odds-making here. Righteousness will triumph over immorality hawked by Hollywood and the MSM.

I like that story about Abraham. Jonah was a tad irritated, though, when Ninevah didn't fall.
