I follow these things pretty closely and have for several years. During Frances I checked every nearby buoy I could and never found even a gust over 69 mph. Dry Tortugas was out when Ivan went by and so far it's hard to find many hurricane gusts with Ivan, I'm sure that will change.

Oddly enough, one of the problems with buoy data is too much data.

They transmit every 10 mins which means you have to slog through a lot of uninteresting data to mine the peak wind data.

The last few hurricanes, I use weather bug centered on the zip code of the land fall, and search outward from there, but , of course, that is as the hurricane approaches.

Wonder why?
