Hollywood Star Boycotts Haiti Cruise (Danny Glover)
The Scotsman/Press Association | 8/23/2004

Lethal Weapon actor Danny Glover has boycotted a cruise to Haiti that he helped to organise, over the ousting of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide and the US-backed interim government that replaced him.

The American organisers of the cruise, commemorating Haiti’s 200th anniversary of independence, have cancelled most tours in the country, but Glover, who helped organise the seven-day event, pulled out of the trip altogether.

The cruise, billed as “Cruising Into History”, is due to arrive in Haiti on Wednesday with about 500 Americans on board, but the trip has been confined to an isolated strip of beach after opposition from groups opposed to the interim government.

“Due to the increasingly critical political situation in Haiti, which resulted in a loss of life, oppression and incarceration of thousands of Haitians, I have cancelled my participation,” Glover said before the cruise set sail on Saturday.

It was unclear if other celebrities were aboard the chartered Royal Caribbean ship, which also planned stops in the Bahamas, US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Organisers cancelled visits to about 10 sites in Haiti where preparations for festivals and performances began two years ago. Haiti marked its 200th anniversary of independence from France on January 1.

Organiser Ron Daniels, of the non-profit Haiti Support Project, announced the cancellations on Wednesday, saying that otherwise it “could be construed as endorsing or legitimising the US-installed government”.

The passengers now plan to stay on the northern beach of Labadee because doing so “does not require any logistical support, security, assistance or participation from this regime”, Daniels said.

President Aristide left Haiti on February 29 during a bloody three-week rebellion. Aristide has accused the United States of co-operating with the rebels and kidnapping him, an allegation Washington has denied.

The Caribbean Community has called for an investigation, and the Organisation of American States agreed to look into the circumstances of Aristide’s departure. Aristide is in temporary exile in South Africa.

So I guess they didn't want to help Haiti after all. They know they can help Haitians without supporting the government. What does it matter to them if a few more Haitians starve?

The Royal Carribean ships have always stopped at Labadee this is nothing out of the ordinary.

I proudly support, and urge Danny Glover to also support relocating the United Nations to Haiti.

The cruise ship should depart the area while the guests are on shore. Let them find rafts back to the US, and then deny them entrance.

"Hi, I'm Danny Glover. You may remember me from such blockbusters as Gone Fishin', Pure Luck and Operation Dumbo Drop. Did I mention I am too dumb to pour pee out of a boot with the instructions on the heel?"

"The media failed to exhault Glover's sensitivety and internationalism as much as we had hoped," said a Glover spokesman. He added, "We had hoped to have Glover all over the Cuban press, the front page of the NYT, of course, CNN and NPR, but this failed to materialize." "In candor, we are disappointed at our comrades in the media. If the bucks aren't there neither will Glover."

When Lethal Weapon released?

Glover's equal opportunity career must be at an all time low to pull this stunt for PR.

Yeah, Danny, I'm boycotting that Haiti cruise, too. I'm also boycotting running for president, flying on the space shuttle, and trimming Osama's beard hair!

Danny Glover's next gig:

Unstopping Mel Gibson's toilet.

When reached for comment, Mr. Glover stated:

"I'm getting to old for this sh@t"

Well, it seems no one in the world cannot escape the reach of FReepdom.

I was on that cruise and have pictures to prove it.

The group in question were wall to wall Communists, real ones, not the pretend kind that you normally see. It was all talk about Comrade this and revolution that. The sponsoring group is no charity, it was a political agitation group masquerading as a charity.

After walking out of a Michael Moore style movie (The Agronomist) blaming the US, the CIA, and believe it or not, Ronald Reagan for just about everything bad that every happened to Haiti, I pretty much kept my distance.

Except for the trip to Labadee. We had special permission to leave the compound and visit the surrounding town. These snakes had decided, weeks, if not longer in advance to cancel the excursion as a political stunt, and had never told us, or the towns people. The locals were devastated. I have friends and relatives who live there, and many in the the town were ruined. The had spend months preparing to receive us. And had spend what was certainly a fortune to them to clean up and repair as well as purchase inventory to sell to the tourists. However anyone might disagree about politics, what those people did to the poor people about the Labadee compound was the most dishonorable and disreputable thing I have ever witnessed.

Aristide is in temporary exile in South Africa.

Note to Ron Daniels and Danny Glover. It won't be temporary if I have anything to say about it, and I'll bet I have more to say about it than you do.

BTW, Mr. Daniels, is your group registered as 501(c3). Inquiring minds want to know.

Old man Glover was safer on that toilet than he will be up to his armpits in popular politics.

I should have read down to your comment before posting; odd that we seem to have shared the same mental image.
