Promise could gut military (Canadian Forces)

The Canadian military may be forced to mothball all of it's remaining destroyers and ground up to a quarter of its front-line fighter jets in order to fulfill a Liberal election promise to create a new, 5,000-strong "peacekeeping brigade."

Bil Graham, the Defense Minister, is to present options on the proposed new brigade to Cabinet by the end of the month, but Defense sources have told the National Post the military has been told to prepare drastic measures to pay for the idea.

In an article posted yesterday on the Web site of Jane's Defence Weekly, the London-based defence publishing and analysis group said senior Canadian officers have been working in secret on finding a way to pay for the promised influx of new troops.

Liberal governments strike again!

In fairness, this is a proposal, that may or may not become a reality.

Excellent. They'll be ripe for our invasion.

Typical liberal wrong-think.

Nobody studies General Grant anymore.

The problem here is that the socialist Canadian federal government really believes that *we* have to defend them...I wonder if they've ever thought about the fact that the new missile defense requires someplace for the pieces of the shot down ICBMs to impact?

Yes, I was thinking that myself.

Isn't that why the Michigan Army National Guard has tanks?

Please hurry before the liberals arm them with broken hockey sticks, a strategic defense initiative designed to strike fear in the hearts of aggressors.

All you need is one man armed with a rifle in a jeep who speaks fluent French and English. The best politically correct one man Canadian army in the world. He may not know how to fire a rifle but he sure as heck is a good multi-cultural Canadian. Priorities matter in Liberal Canada.

Since most of us live within 150 miles of the border, what better place for expended missles to land but in the far north. Our willingness to join the missle shield should earn us some good will from you folks. National defense is more than just boots on the ground.

Hi Albertabound,

This "Peacekeeping brigade," has got me worried. Does this mean Canadian troops will be deployed in some Third-world cesspool without the means to support/adequately defend themselves? So that when, stuff hits the fan, the liberals can convieniently and characteristically blame the military?

Liberals be damned.

What is there left to gut? The Canadian military couldn't fight their way out of a sodden cardboard box. Not one penny of American taxpayer money should be spent to defend the craven socialist regime in Canada.

Is that sentiment widespread among Canadians that they are doing the United States a favor by allowing the United States to extend its missile defense shield to protect Canada?

good point - and yeah I expect the tundra to be a less than healthy place if the missle shield ever becomes a reality... I guess my point is that the socialists in your federal government intentionally shortchange your military, figuring we'll have to make up the difference...a good example was the fact that we had to supply the spare filters for your guys' gas masks when they went to fight the terrorists. The thing is that you folks have some good military units, it's just too bad your government can't spend the money to treat them right.

No, the widespread sentiment is that the bad guys are more likely to be targeting American cities with their missles than ours and we had best co-operate in order to maximize the capabilities of this defense initiative. Most of us love and respect America and want Americans to be safe including my family members in New Jersey.
