COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - John Sayles plans to screen his new movie - a political satire that takes aim at President Bush - in cities in Colorado next month.
Sayles filmed "Silver City," about a man running for governor of Colorado and a disgraced investigative reporter, in Denver and Leadville last year.
The movie will be shown Sept. 9 at the Kimball's Twin Peak Theater in Colorado Springs. Screenings also are scheduled for Denver, as well as Santa Fe, N.M., to benefit local and national nonprofit groups.
"That will be incredible," said Kimball Bayles, owner of the Colorado Springs theater. "I'll say, 'John, I played all your movies. I never made a dime, but I love them.'"
"Silver City," starring Chris Cooper, Kris Kristofferson, Daryl Hannah and Richard Dreyfuss, is set for nationwide release on Sept. 17.
Sayles also directed "Lone Star,""Sunshine State" and "The Alamo."
Talk about a stellar lineup!
There was an article titled "Springs gets Hollywood treatment" in the Colorado Springs Gazette this morning.
Here are a few excerpts:
By ANDREW WINEKE - THE GAZETTE
In what promises to be the biggest movie event in recent Colorado Springs history, Oscar-nominated independent director John Sayles plans to come to Colorado Springs in September for a star-studded presentation of his new political satire, Silver City.
....
Publicists said they didnt know why Colorado Springs was chosen for the presentation.
....
Silver City is both a political thriller and a satire aimed at President Bush that revolves around a local politician, played by Cooper, running to become governor of Colorado.
The film was shot in the Denver area in 2003. The cast is rounded out by Richard Dreyfuss, Mario Bello, Danny Huston, Thora Birch, Billy Zane, Tim Roth, Miguel Ferrer, Michael Murphy and Mary Kay Place.
The movie opens nationally Sept. 17.
And this "takes aim at President Bush" in the sense that........?????
Nice reporting job by AP.
I'll wait to judge on my own. Sayles is one of the best American filmmakers we've got and I imagine that the film is a might bit more nuanced than that description suggests.
Lone Star was very good, IMO...one of the handful of movies I've seen in the last 10 years.
LOL!
I'm guessing negotiations for Krippendorf's Tribe II, Return of the Clan of the Cave Bear and Son of Convoy fell through.
Imagine Hollywood actually making a movie that makes fun of a conservative politician. THAT'S never happened before.
Oh, how ORIGINAL!
It's not. The ACLU went ga ga over it. It is a straight forward BUSH BASH!
When was the last time that Darryl Hannah was in anything substantial? Steel Magnolias? The same goes for Kris Kristofferson. As for Richard Dryfuzz, it is so easy to go for years without realizing that he ever existed.
since there is a complete lack of information regarding the substance of the movie (which I found very interesting) other than "a political satire that takes aim at President Bush" without any information backing that claim, I'll be curious to see if it's leaning as far as the article would like to have us think. We shall see.
It's hard to say with the social/political climate is these days.
Anymore I have to lump those together because it seems I can't go anywhere w/out getting into a political debate with people anymore..it's highly amusing to me when I'm around liberals!
I read on IMDB that it's a thriller in the vein of Lone Star. Where'd you hear that about the ACLU "going gaga"?
I read this posting on IMDB: "I actually just got back from a screening of this film. It's almost "Chinatown" set in 2004 with a bit of "Lone Star" mixed in."
Dryfus will be wearing his anti war tampon for the show...
They'll probably fly in a lot of lefties to drool over it. Actually, they can probably recruit as many as they want up here in the Boulder area.
I remember seeing "Lone Star." It was very draggy; sort of noir, I didn't like it.
However, my point is this:

What better audience than thousands of ski bums and snow boarders on mushrooms for it's premier. This movie will be collecting dust in video stores in 2 months. I wouldn't step within 5 miles of that premier. I couldn't be around that many guys with ponytails and their wives smelling like hemp.
