ELECTION 2004 Bush holds 23% lead among veterans But those with no military service favor Kerry by 10 points

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted: August 5, 2004 1:37 p.m. Eastern

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- © 2004 WorldNetDaily.com Military veterans favor President Bush over John Kerry by a 58 to 35 percent margin, according to a new poll.

The Rasmussen Reports survey also showed those with no military service favor Kerry by ten percentage points, 51 to 41.

Of those Americans who say they know someone serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, 54 percent favor Bush, compared to 44 percent siding with Kerry.

On the question of who would make a better commander in chief, Bush edges Kerry, 47 to 45 percent.

Fifty-four percent of veterans give the president good or excellent ratings for handling the situation in Iraq, the poll showed.

The opinion of veterans has coming sharply into focus recently with the release of a scathing TV commercial featuring a group of 13 men who served in Vietnam calling Kerry a liar and unfit for the presidency.

Also, the unreleased book "Unfit for Command" includes several stories questioning Kerry's integrity, including one claiming the candidate earned his Silver Star in Vietnam "by killing a lone, fleeing, teenage Viet Cong in a loincloth."

This is in contrast to the most recent CBS poll that showed Kerry with a one point lead; 48-47 I believe. But that same poll did have Bush ahead with veterans by 13 points before the DNC convention.

I am not sure why the media doesn't believe this. Kerry himself has admitted committing atrocities during the war. Why doesn't the media ask Kerry about what those were. Certainly Bush would not be given a free pass. When dirt against Bush is found, the media investigates the dirt, not the source of the dirt.

Am I the only one who sees the insanity of the line about non veterans supporting Kerry by 51% to 41%?
Gang, lets do the math. This is a very polarizing election. Lets say that because of this, 120 million people will vote. Even during WW II we only had 12 million men and women in uniform and we had 140 million people. So, even then, that was less than 10% and the ratio of vets to non vets was 1:11.6
Today we have ( and lets be very generous maybe 3 million living vets) This means that the ratio of vets to non vets
who will be voting is now 1:40. So there will be 117 million non vets voting. If Kerry already has 51% of this number, that's 59.6 million votes. I think it is insane to say Kerry will start out with almost 60 million votes!
Doesn't anyone who writes these releases talk them through out loud? Even if every single vet voted for Bush he would still be out of the race right now and that is far from the case.

"My name is Steve Gardner. I served in 1966 and 1967 on my first tour of duty in Vietnam on Swift boats, and I did my second tour in '68 and '69, involved with John Kerry in the last 2 1/2 months of my tour. The John Kerry that I know is not the John Kerry that everybody else is portraying. I served alongside him and behind him, five feet away from him in a gun tub, and watched as he made indecisive moves with our boat, put our boats in jeopardy, put our crews in jeopardy... if a man like that can't handle that 6-man crew boat, how can you expect him to be our Commander-in-Chief?"
-- Steven Gardner

The above quote was from a press conference given at the National Press Club in Washington on May 4, 2004. You may view Steven’s comments at the following web site. Just scroll down to Steven’s picture and click on it.

Searching through that web site, you will find 250 men who served on Swift boats, including the entire chain of command above Lt. Kerry, agree with Steven Gardner that Kerry is not fit to be Commander-in-Chief. That compares to the 13 crew members who support his candidacy.

Probably the "I signed up for free college money and I never expected to do ANYTHING!" babies... I know a couple of them and they're quite disgusting indeed... they feel that if Gore was President, they wouldn't have had to do anything (probably sadly all too true)

My question is this; is Rasmussen any good? Surely the veteran community can't be this volatile that the CBS and Rasmussen poll can both be right yet have such contrasting results only a few days apart.

I believe the number of veterans is about 29 million - 10% of the population.

Probably the same as those foreign leaders who want scary to win. Bush will carry at least 90% of the military vote. If the other 10% knew what kerry has in store for them they would vote for President Bush. Bush/Cheney 2004
