KERRY'S DROP IN POLL DEFIES 'CONVENTION'
New York Post ^ | 8/02/04 | DEBORAH ORIN

Posted on 08/02/2004 1:17:12 AM PDT by kattracks

[snip]

Some analysts had predicted this year's convention bounces would be smaller because the nation is so closely divided, but no one predicted a zero or even negative bounce.

Kerry spokesman David Wade brushed off Gallup, saying, "We had a successful convention, made progress in a closely divided nation with a tiny number of undecided voters, and Americans have made up their minds that they don't like the direction George Bush has taken our country."

But Republicans said both polls show the Democratic convention failed to reach out to swing voters, and distractions like Teresa Heinz Kerry's "Shove it!" crack to a reporter, John Kerry's astro-bunny suit, and Al Sharpton's fiery rhetoric took a toll.

"All the Democrats did was play to their own base, and the media echo chamber, which is liberal, thought it was great — but the rest of the country wasn't listening and didn't care," said Republican pollster John McLaughlin.

The bounce is usually calculated as the shift in the gap between the two candidates.

This makes me want to add "conventional wisdom" to my list of oxymorons...

maybe you missed it, but USA Today announced that they've ordered Gallup to keep polling. Apparently, they did not like the results.

Guess who pays Gallup's bill? Think Gallup may get the hint in the next round of results they produce?

All the Democrats did was play to their own base

Wrong! They ignored a good portion of their base, the Anti-War - Lets get out of Iraq NOW - base didn't like the message and I'm willing to bet the reporting for duty salute thingy that Kerry did turned them off big time. They wanted to see the Anti-Bush and all they got was Bush Lite.

Yours truly predicted it a few days before The Speech. I knew he was never going to be a great speaker but he could have at least delivered a passable one. Instead, he gave one that stunk. The Mother Of All Le Pew Speeches. So yes, the lack of a bounce defied convention. John F*ckin' is the most improbable candidate ever to grace the American political stage.

Exactly. Now go and tell your liberal friends they're voting for a George Bush clone. That'll make 'em even madder! (laughing)

But, I don't have any liberal friends!

"I'm willing to bet the reporting for duty salute thingy that Kerry did turned them off big time."

Yes, good point, I bet it did. It turned me off big time, but I didn't think about how the war-haters would see it. Kerry may have a hard time getting those voters to the polls, but do they ever even GO the the polls?

I really liked the headline for this article, btw. A very nice pun!

Kinda like "keep counting the votes".

"We don't need a win! We need a Roman Triumph!"

"Sir, but he's already won by 10,000 more votes then there are voters!"

"The ballots don't make the votes, you just need to count them right. Keep counting!"

The "salute" also seriously harmed al Qerry's status in the minds of voters who 4 years ago had to deal with another Democrat who was borderline insane.

The polls they were quoting on Meet the Press had Kerry up to 52%.

Al Sharpton's fiery rhetoric took a toll.

Definitely. Al might be the liberals' darling, but middle America sees this race-baiting liar for what he is.

I am so sick of this "divided" nonsense. Clinton never got more than 51% of the vote. The media love to lie about history.

That was taken BEFORE the speech and was a Zogby poll that has been heavily slanted towards the dems of late...maybe his Arab background is over riding his common sense
