The Republican presidential ticket is still having a hard time with black voters, according to a survey by Black America's Political Action Committee (BAMPAC), which found that 73 percent of respondents disapprove of the way President Bush is handling his job.
Seventeen percent of the 800 black registered voters surveyed believe that Mr. Bush deserves re-election, and the president's approval rating in the poll is 21 percent.
Although Mr. Bush has had troubled relations with black voters, his numbers are an improvement over the meager 8 percent of the black vote he won in 2000.
As for Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, 53 percent support him, with 32 percent reporting that the senator from Massachusetts is the best person to replace the president.
"President Bush's approval rating among African Americans has not fluctuated greatly since 2002, when he had a high approval rating in the aftermath of the U.S. response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack," BAMPAC President Alvin Williams said.
"Since then he has returned to his average rating among African Americans, which has been in the range of 20 to 25 percent," he said.

What can we do about this? There must be a way. Most blacks have taken liberal dogma hook, line and sinker.
20 to 25 percent is a very good rating from a traditionally Democratic group. Its not to get better and its not going to get worse. When you consider how much President Bush has been slammed, villified, and painted in the blackest of terms by black liberals, he should be getting a measly 1 or 2% approval rating in the black community. So he should better his 2000 figure a tad which could make a difference in a close election.
Things are slowly changing as more blacks are moving into the upper middle class. They don't want to be taxed to death either. Black leaders like Jesse Jackson, who is a vicious extortionist, and Al Sharpton are not helping matters.
A minority of blacks supports the President. The truth of the matter is it has nothing to do with his personality but rather due to the fact most blacks prefer to stay on the Liberal Plantation. In a free country people have the right to stay slaves if they want and I guess whoever comes out for freedom will find a way to do so. The long term picture isn't as bleak.
Blacks are not likely to leave liberalism behind as they move up economically. In this they're like to resemble Jews, who live like Episcopalians and vote like Puerto Ricans. Let's just say party loyalty is very difficult to change. And so far blacks have not had a good reason to change to the point where they become a swing group between the two major parties.
Liberals seem to want to keep people of ALL races down, dumb and dependant. Easier to manipulate people that way.
What's missing from this report is important:Blacks are not very enthusiastic about Kerry and I doubt they will come to vote in the numbers they did for Clinton or Gore. And the better poll watcher program the Republicans have in place will put a damper on the widespread fraud which occurred in many Black precincts the last time.
Reagan convinced millions of Irish Americans to toss tradition and leave the Democrat party. Changed America for the better.
This may happen for blacks, but victocrat liberal "leaders" are LOUD and hateful regarding Condi and Colin. They attack non-lib blacks like a pack of hungry dogs. So blacks stay 90%+ on the Dem Plantation.
Who is the brave conservative black leader who can break the deadlock? Maybe he/she hasn't revealed himself yet.
"Who is the brave conservative black leader who can break the deadlock?"
Micheal Steele - my very brave and honorable Lt Governor.
I'm originally from Texas, and he's the only thing about Maryland that I am proud of.
And he will be speaking at the Rep Convention.
All of youse sound so concerned! Look, this election will be a surprise for Democrats. Blacks, esp. the middle class, know that the Dems are now the Extreme Left. Issues like "gay" marriage are going to split the Black vote away from the Dems.
Things are slowing starting to change. I have noticed that many young black individuals are beginning to question why there is such a loyalty to the Democratic party. The age bracket that I am referencing is between 25-35 years old.
I am in this age bracket(30yo) and I am a black female. I used to be a Democrat. It seemed like a reflex action to vote Democratic at each election without giving it any thought. It has been ingrained in most black individuals' psyche. Most people do not question the party's views or why they are voting for the party. It has become a subconscious action for most people. However, I do not like to follow the crowd. I tend to question everything. So, I researched the platforms and views of both sides. I was astounded and ashamed that I had been a Democrat. I recently changed my party and became a Republican. Actually, I was always a Republican at heart. I just didn't realize it.
In the black communities, for some strange reason, no one questions being a Democrat. From the moment that you can vote, you just register as a Democrat because you are black. It is "what you are supposed to do". If you do not, you are branded as "trying to be white" or "not in your place". It is a sick and weird mentality that has been fueled by the NAACP, Jesse J, rap "music", etc. It is also very dangerous and self-defeating for black Americans. On a more positive note, however, I see that things are changing. People, such as myself, are willing to think "out of the box" and gain more knowledge about politics and the various parties. Education is the key. Also, it helps when you see prominent, highly-qualified black Republicans, such as Dr. Rice and Powell. It encourages more blacks to research the Republican party.
Sadly, my parents' generation are going to vote Democrat no matter what. However, there are a few individuals who may secretly vote across party lines. They would not voice their support for Bush. Unlike my parents' generation, my peers have been considered the rebellious generation. We are very inquisitive and we do not like to be told what to think or to do. We research the issues, evaluate what is important to us, and act accordingly. In my case, the correct action was to switch parties from Democrat to Republican. It was the only party that made sense to me.
Well, this is just my opinion. I definitely do not speak for everyone.
thanks for your candid comments, and welcome to the Free Republic.
I agree with you. I feel that there will be more Blacks voting for Bush this November. They may not tell the pollsters or anyone else. A number of Black Democrats will secretly vote for Bush because of the "gay" marriage issue. A lot of predominantly Black churches are really upset about "gay" marriages and the current social views of the Democrat party.
Thank you!
"I'll never understand why black voters are so dedicated to a party that put forth policies which basically decimated their entire race. Why won't they wake up?"
From the "mail call" section of the local paper:
Woops.
I was not referring to blacks regarding "stupidity".
That was directed at the lack of historical context/memorized propaganda of the origins of the KKK, regarding whomever phoned in those idiotic "opinions".
[drat. sometimes things just don't come out right]...;)
You have to come out to -western- Maryland.
It truly is "God's country" and *quite* unlike the "liberal" parts of the state that curse the rest of us with draconian laws.....:)
