WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Efforts to pass a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage foundered Wednesday afternoon when the proposal failed to garner enough votes in the Senate to stay alive.

After final arguments by the leaders of each party, Republicans mustered 48 votes, 12 short of the 60 they needed to overcome a procedural hurdle and move the proposed amendment to the floor.

It wasn't even a vote on the ammendment - only a vote to discuss it more & vote on the actual ammendment later (cloture with 60 votes needed). Picking at nits - the actual ammendment was never voted on, so no one can say they either voted for or against it.

It seems to me that leaving it to the states opens an even bigger can of worms. There are already people going to Massachusetts from other states and trying to get married. I think the can of worms is opened when some states approve of it, some states don't, people move around, and the majority of Americans support it, despite what these politically correct individuals state. They are in effect throwing the issue to the Courts and we KNOW what they will decide.
