WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Efforts to pass a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage foundered Wednesday afternoon when the proposal failed to garner enough votes in the Senate to stay alive.

After final arguments by the leaders of each party, Republicans mustered 48 votes, 12 short of the 60 they needed to overcome a procedural hurdle and move the proposed amendment to the floor.

Not even a majority. That says something.

Whose dumb idea was it to erect a procedural hurdle I'll never know. More's the pity we couldn't get the 50 who voted to kill an up or down vote will be safe from telling us where they stand on the issue of marriage.

Yup, that it was a complete waste of time and resources that could have been spent doing something positive elsewhere...

"...the proposal failed to garner enough votes in the Senate to stay alive."

It wasn't even a vote on the ammendment - only a vote to discuss it more & vote on the actual ammendment later (cloture with 60 votes needed). Picking at nits - the actual ammendment was never voted on, so no one can say they either voted for or against it.

To be honest, I was opposed to this marriage ammendment. No I do not support gay marriage, to me it is left up to the states. To me this ammendment could have opened a whole can of worms that we would regret later on IMHO..

Exactly. My take is if the gutless cowards had to vote on the amendment itself, it would have passed. I don't think any Dim would want to come on the record as being against marriage in an election year.

If you oppose the amendment, you support homosexual marriage.

There is no other way to stop it. The courts will impose it on the states.

It seems to me that leaving it to the states opens an even bigger can of worms. There are already people going to Massachusetts from other states and trying to get married. How long do you think it will stand, that if you are Gay and "get married" that you can't move to another state and remain "married"?

I think the can of worms is opened when some states approve of it, some states don't, people move around, and the majority of Americans support it, despite what these politically correct individuals state. They are in effect throwing the issue to the Courts and we KNOW what they will decide.

Chaffee, McCain and Snowe are the usual suspects.

I wonder about Sununu, Collins and Campbell though.

Only one Democrat co-sponsored - the honorable Zell Miller and only one democrat broke ranks - Byrd. The democrats can claim the attempt to defeat tradition marriage in America - they wouldn't even let it come to a debate!

Edwards (D-NC), Not Voting

As important as THIS vote is for families of America and Edwards weasels out. Some "leadership".

I've a mental image of the Exxon Valdese captain just before the big rip...
