FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- John Atkins isn't the sort of person one would expect to find crowding into the Cameo Theatre here to see Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11."
The 26-year-old U.S. Army machine gunner from Fort Bragg voted for President Bush. A graduate of the University of Colorado-Boulder, he enlisted last year "to serve my country" and expects to go to Iraq later in 2004.
I just can't even go down that road of soldiers supporting the movie. My husband could have lost his life in a war that this idiot (moore) is bad mouthing. Worse my husband is fighting for his luxury to make this *$%# movie. Humph , angry in middle America

As you know the military is like everywhere else,a cross section of society.... Dems wear fatigues too!......when my hubby was in Iraq, I would e-mail him articles so he could post them in the mess for all...this was during the time of Kerry/Hanoi Jane brouhaha...believe it or not most of the younger GI's knew nothing of Hanoi Jane and did not care.
Thanks for the link. Disgusted in middle America.
"John Atkins isn't the sort of person one would expect to find crowding into the Cameo Theatre"
By "crowding" they mean that the 35 seat Cameo Theatre was near capacity. Doubtless a tiny percentage of or troops are clueless enough to enjoy watching Anti-US propaganda.
Isn't it the case that most military personnel -- retired or active duty -- vote Republican because they are conservative to begin with? I mean, just as most people who go into journalism or entertainment are liberal to begin so too is the opposite true for the military.
So even if this propoganda film results in a less positive view of the current administration for military personnel, it seems odd that they would then turn around and vote for the most liberal ticket in history. I could see not voting, but voting for Kerry seems a bit of a stretch because it would betray the values that led them to support Republicans in the first place.
Two polls in May included veterans. One had Kerry close at 46-51, another had Bush ahead by a greater margin of 54-41.
But anyway, is there any in-depth polling data on the voting habits of the military?
There are plenty of young adults who are quite liberal, yet still enlist because they have no real skills, no job prospects, and the military is a steady paycheck. This one has a college degree, but enlisted rather than attend OCS and serve his country as an officer. That says something.
There are lots of soldiers here who hate being in the Army, but entered because it beats saying "Would you like fries with that?"
Yes, but isn't it the case that a solid majority of military personnel have been GOP voters for decades now?
Nor did the New York Times mention the small size of the Cameo Theatre when it boasted about how Fahrenheit 9/11 sold out in Fayetteville. The Cameo was the only screen in town showing that bilge.
y'all ever in houston we'll put you up in my mom' place- BBQ & beer on me.
Prayers for safe return, thanks for the service.
Out here.
I personally know soldiers that are watching and praising this movie.
Most are conservatives, but trust me, there are Dems in those ranks too.
If you guys are ever passing through, let me know and we'll go to dinner.
Yes, but the 'most of' part is reassuring. I hope it stays that way.
Doesn't speak well of the soldiers that they would praise a "documentary" rife with lies, distortions and plain ole HS, does it?
Good for you Sink.
It caused an interesting discussion. :-)
