In an article meant to assert outgoing civilian administrator Paul Bremer had a distant relationship with the Iraqi people, the Los Angeles Times falsely claimed he departed without addressing the nation.
The paper said Bremer "left without even giving a final speech to the country -- almost as if he were afraid to look in the eye the people he had ruled for more than a year."
But Bremer in fact delivered a speech broadcast on Iraqi TV, which was covered by the U.S. media.
The Times addressed the error, but did not necessarily correct itself, reported Fox News host Brit Hume.
After learning of the speech, the L.A. paper said Bremer's "spokesman has since said that Bremer taped an address that was given to Iraqi broadcast media. The spokesman said the address was not publicized to the Western news media."
However, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Bremer's speech to the Iraqis June 29.
"You are ready now for sovereignty, and we think it's an important part of our obligation as temporary custodian to return the sovereignty to you," Bremer told the nation. "I have confidence that the Iraqi government is ready to meet the challenges that lie ahead."
But Bremer in fact delivered a speech broadcast on Iraqi TV, which was covered by the U.S. media.
This is ridiculous even for the left, to report something didn't happen when it was broadcast on TV. What idiots.
Yes, a lot of the loud liberal left are idiots. Their intellectual development was stunted by all the drugs they took back in the hippie days. They have delusions of grandeur left over from all the 'highs' they experienced on drugs. These old hippies think a concept is true only for the reason that they state it - truth is very illusive to most of these 50-something hippies. The only real change in these liberals over the years is the onset of wrinkles.
The LAT has run a (lame) correction. The Washington Post has not.
I wonder how much of what we're seeing lately is do to the Fox lawsuit, where a Fl appeals court ruled that there was no law requiring media (broadcast, IIRC, but it may apply here), to tell the truth.
The liberal media will say anything and hope they don't they get caught. I expect them to lie.
DUH... The partisan press chooses not to show almost anything of benefit to the Bush Administration, but hits the airwaves every hour with anything that could possibly be interpreted as negative.
I am waiting for all the stories about Wilson's lies about his trip to Niger. We heard about the 16 words / yellow cake ad nauseum last year. Now that President Bush has been vindicated on the issue, the partisan press is very quiet.
Parent company Tribune? Thought so.
