Polygamy is about older men hiding behind religion to obtain very young, vulnerable women.

Or, in some circles, it's about welfare scams.....

I think it can be that but it has historically been more than that.
I think it is problematic if widespread because men with wealth end up with a lion's share of the best available mates and hence a lot of frustrated young men starting out without much means. (actually, I ink's it's counter to nuclear families period)
I guess polygamy started out as a way to increase familial survival and growth? (I'm not sure)...maybe some students of cultural anthropology could answer that.
I have seen an informal illegitimate polygamy quite common throughout black culture from West Africa to the Caribbean Basin and the Southern USA and it seems to be in those cases more about opportunity and matriarchal gathering to raise broods of illegitimate children by men who may support them nicely as in West Africa or not support them at all in the Caribbean or the South. How and where all that started I don't know but I suspect it may be residual from hunter gatherer tribal life.
Polygamy is a very old tradition and while it may sound fun to horndogs...I'm betting it's quite a challenge.
I believe polyandry is quite common in Tibet and Nepal to keep land in the family.....polyandry is somewhat less palatable than polygamy...lol
