Virgin Cola returns — but more quietly

Virgin Cola is giving it a go in America once again. But this time, the British brand's invasion wasn't led by an army tank.

Virgin Cola just became available in limited distribution in Southern California. A national rollout is planned for next year.

Some people still remember the first time Virgin Cola reached American stores. It was six years ago, heralded by publicity-seeking British billionaire Richard Branson of Virgin Group. For the launch, he rode into New York's Times Square atop a tank, promising a battle with Coke and Pepsi.

Virgin Cola was a flop and disappeared from the U.S. market. This time, the cola's American relaunch is looking far more modest.

"We don't have any tanks in the garage," said Marc Pollack, a spokesman for a Beverly Hills, Calif., company that is a part of the plans to try Virgin again.

Virgin Cola will essentially be a private-label product. Current plans call for it be sold at 7-Eleven stores. It's a big chain but one not found everywhere; there are no stores in Georgia.

The brand will be marketed as a premium-priced product, the company said, with four flavors, including Blonde (vanilla) and Jade (lime).

"I don't think anybody can really challenge the dominant players," said Ranjit Singh, chief operating officer of Virgin Drinks North America. But the company believes there's room for a niche brand.

In the United States, Virgin Cola is the product of a joint venture between the Firm, a Beverly Hills talent agency and production company, and Britain's Virgin Group.

Branson himself is busy with a number of projects and wasn't involved in touting the launch.

Branson's company is best-known for Virgin-branded operations that include a record label and airlines overseas. Virgin is planning to launch a low-cost airline in the United States.

That soft drink needs to be deflowered immediately.

Scourge of Yazid:

That is a fatuous statement you scurvy dhimmi. The favorite, most refreshing caffeinated soft drink on the market is...

MECCA COLA YAZIDI!

There is no other halal cola. Inshallah, it is so good that it makes "Scourge" antsy in the pants! Alhamdulillah! The fine, olive-complected houris of paradise drink Mecca Cola. Bismallah, I will sip of its sweet, sweet nectar right now. Scourge works up a mighty thirst on FreeRepublic.

Ah, the possibilities are endless.

Virgin Cola can't really "give it a go once again" can it?

Isn't there a Mecca Cola and A Qibla Cola? Both have the ad slogan that they're anti-American?

Who cares? Virgin Cola sucks. I always hated raiding the fridge to find that my mum had bought cheap imitation cola because it was on sale (buy 1 get 53 free: that sort of thing). Why do mums always buy crap soda?

... also...... cola is the plural form of colon......... so virgin cola is really..... disturbing. Are they marketing in San Francisco?

Andrew

I dunno, not much difference between V Cola and COca or Pepsi -- they're all just flavoured water with C02.

You drink one cola, you've had them all. I buy Wal-Mart cola, and I've tried cola bought at a small chain store here in the US called Pamida, their cola is called Vess. They're all produced and packaged by Coca-Cola.

The lone bottle tried to make good it's escape.
But this was not to be.
Outside the protective confines of it's six pack, it was an easy mark.
Seperated from it's herd, it was vulnerable to predators.
And there came one now!
Grab! Grab!
The bottle tried vainly to break the heavy grasp that held it!
Too late!
It's cap was viciously torn off, and it's liquid guts were consumed.
It's thirst unslaked, the predatory hand went back for another one..

Wrote that for a stereogram image on a thread awhile back.
The image was a six pack of bottles..

Well, they might just be fatuous...if they're being issued by someone like Osama Bin Laden, Ayatollah Khameini, or Sheik Omar Bakri.
