WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The United States has been examining the prospect that Israel will attack Iranian nuclear facilities in an attempt to prevent the Islamic republic from completing an atomic bomb as early as this year.
U.S. analysts and government sources said the Bush administration has discussed the prospect of an Israeli air strike at several levels of government. They said the issue has been examined in terms of the diplomatic, military and security implications for the United States, particularly its military presence in Iraq and the Persian Gulf region.
The issue of Iran's nuclear weapons program was discussed by President George Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon during the latter's visit to the White House on April 14. The sources said the two men were alone during the brief discussion in an effort by the president to gauge a likely Israeli response to the completion of an Iranian nuclear bomb.
"It would be intolerable for the Middle East if they [Iran] get a nuclear weapon," Bush said after meeting Sharon.

Israeli/Middle-East PING
High time, too. Could it be later blamed on premature detonation?
alot of it is likely in underground facilities, not sure how they would destroy this facility with an airstrike. unless they nuked it.
JUST DO IT!
Go get 'em IDF!
GO ISRAEL!!!
I think Israel would probably just take credit for it; it would send a strong message to others, especially Syria, who I view as more of a threat with WMDs.
I'm sure the US Military has been more than happy to supply Israel with state of the art bunker-busters.
The Israeli's have experimented with American type bunker buster bombs, and have also experimented with hyperthermoberic bombs. Combine the two with JDAM delivery - and you don't need a nuke.
I wasn't aware of that. Maybe someone would know. What about our own "bunker-buster bombs", "Moabs", etc.?
Maybe the IDF can bomb Faluza to oblivion on the way there or back...I'm not picky.
(Our side seems to have conceeded that hell hole to the terrorists.)
not at all. the discovery channel had a show that looked at the iraqi underground bunker facilities hit with US weapons, including tours of the facilities with US military personnel. the bunker busters did hardly any damage to them at all.
Thanks. I think this is doable.
if you really want to build an underground facility with enough depth and enough steel reinforced concrete above you - the thing is essentially impenetrable to conventional weapons. that's why you see the stories of the US researching production of these small bunker buster nukes.
What happened to Bush/DoD request for small tactical nukes? I believe they were killed by the Senate. Were they planned for scenarios such as this?
