Victim's Last Letters Express Longing for Korea, Displeasure With America

By Soh Ji-young Staff Reporter The final letters written by Kim Sun-il just before he was kidnapped by Iraqi insurgents are further deepening the public's sorrow and distress over the precious life lost.

Kim's close friend, Shim Song-dae, disclosed to the public Wednesday several emails that Kim had sent to him in May prior to his kidnapping, which revealed his yearning to return home and see his loved ones.

In a email dated May 8, Kim wrote, ``With all the Koreans nearly gone, and the church teams gone as well, we have been holding services with just us five employees for three weeks now. I am taking charge of the sermons...''

Kim also expressed his deep desire to return to Korea, saying ```I really don't want to be here anymore. I want to go to Korea as fast as I can. Please pray for me so I can go back quickly. I really want to go, I really do.''

In an email on May 15, Kim excitedly shared with Shim his plans to leave Iraq in late May or early June and take off work for about 20 days. His vacation was later postponed for several weeks.

``I feel a little giddy when thinking of going on my vacation. I really want to eat kimchi and chajangmyon (Chinese noodles) until my stomach bursts,'' he wrote.

The letter also showed that Kim harbored negative feelings toward the U.S. and was critical of the actions U.S. soldiers committed toward Iraqis.

``I think I learned how to treat the weak while I have been here... I plan to bring back some shocking pictures of U.S. soldiers' acts of brutality. I will never be able to forget the American's acts of brutality, especially those of Bush and Rumsfeld.''

In his last email dated May 30, he said, ``I find myself looking at the calendar more and more often because of my vacation date. When I go to Korea, I will buy you anything that you want to eat. Look forward to it.''

Kim decided to go to Iraq to earn money for graduate school as well as fulfill his dream of conducting missionary work in Arabic countries, Shim said.

He added, ``Sun-il said that he used to take part in services every Friday with Iraqi employees and preach for them.''

Kim, 33, first went to Iraq in June of last year as a translator for a Korean trading company, Gana General Trading Co, and was due to come home next month to celebrate his father's 70th birthday.

Well, he pleaded to kidnappers that he loves Iraqis and hates Americans. However, they killed him anyway. His fashionable liberal attitude could not save him.

Muslims are beyond human help. This is how they respond to their benefactors.

I didn't know Bush and Rumsfeld were in Iraq, much less met this guy. Wow, things I learn new everyday.

Whoa - I din't realize that Bush and Rummy were over there doing some damage. No doubt the pics he took have Bush and Rummy whooping up on some poor innocent Iraqi.

This sounds too much like he was on the daily Dem fax broadcast list.

Ok, now I have to ask--was he taken hostage, or did he go along willingly (at least, up until it became clear he was going to be beheaded)? Regardless of which is true, he didn't deserve to die like he did.

This will cause the conspiracy heads on the left to absolutely explode!

RIP, sir, whatever your opinions.

It will not save Jews, Christians, Blacks, Gays, Same Sex Marriage Partners, Women, etc either. Vote for John Kerry and the Democrats and you'll get a good taste of beheading right here in the USA! How any of these people above think they are going to be immune to this madness is beyond me. Pure fools who have a death wish!

Re #8

So far, all circumstances indicate that he was indeed taken hostage from the beginning.

Yea, I believe that. A nobody writes home as says he's mad at the Americans ESPECIALLY BUSH AND RUMSFIELD. Yea, that rings true.

The Korea Times wouldn't take quotes out of context to further an editorial agenda, would they.

Gotta call BS on these emails.Who had access to his computer? Why didn't he email photos of these "abuses" to his friend? Why would he implicate President Bush and Rumsfield? IMHO,someone else emailed these statements.

Anyone know off hand when he was abducted?

Well, I have a question, too: why don't these people just leave when they want to or feel this way? Is somebody forcing them to stay?

I believe he was a useful idiot. That was what the first reports suggested, and these emails seem to confirm it.

South Korea has had the same luxury as Western Europe, protection by U.S. forces, which has allowed them to grow soft and complacent and widely leftist. During the period of nuclear standoff it may have been necessary to position U.S. troops there to maintain the balance of power, but it may have been a mistake not to involve our allies more deeply in their own defense.

Liberal Americans, beware. Keep going down the same road.

It can't happen here
It can't happen here
I'm telling you my dear that it can't happen here
Whoa, it's important that you believe me bum, bum, bum, bum
That it can't happen here.

I see a future market for steel mesh turtle necks for our liberal friends. Would certainly make such a "nice" Holiday gift.

I wonder how the pictures he had of American acts of brutality compare to the video of the act of brutality inflicted upon him?
