Maybe it's time you learned some Arabic. Okay, maybe just one Arabic term - Al-Takeyya. It's the Islamic principle of lying for the sake of Allah. That's right, folks. Falsehoods told to prevent denigration of Islam, to protect oneself, or to promote the cause of Islam are sanctioned by the Qur'an.
Included in the list of practices encouraged and permitted under the Muslim doctrine of Al-Takeyya are lying under penalty of perjury in testimony before the United States Congress, lying or making distorted statements to the media such as claiming that Islam is a religion of peace, and deceiving fellow Muslims when the one lying has deemed them to be apostates.
Yes, I know. You were raised in a Western culture that thinks the truly holy among us should always be truthful. God is a God of truth, you say. Therefore, His disciples must be truthful.
Sorry folks, I've got some bad news for you.
Only the God of the Judeo-Christian heritage expects that His people will be truthful.
That certain seventh century CE Arabian desert demon moon-god (I employ the lower case "g" deliberately, here), whom the Muslims call Allah, ain't like HaShem.
The God (note our deliberate use of the upper case "g", here) Whom we Jews and Christians know and love cannot lie.
Not so Allah. Allah, who rose to the top of the pantheon of 360 gods worshipped at the Ka'abah in Mecca, is a master of deceit. He expects his followers to lie for him.
And the lie is different at every level.
The implications of this truth are significant, especially with respect to any attempt to bring peace to the Muslim-Israeli conflict. Government leaders who ignore how the fundamental principle of Al-Takeyya is commonly employed to declare a Hudna will never be prepared for the inevitable collapse of their plans to implement their Road Maps to peace in the Middle East.
What's a Hudna?
If you haven't heard yet what a Hudna is, maybe you need to spend some time reading our on-line tongue-in-cheek Glossary of Middle East Terms.
A Hudna is a cease-fire. But when called within the context of Al-Takeyya, Islam's theology of military deception, it really amounts to a time-out to reload during a period of temporary weakness on the part of the follower of Islam. In short, when Muslims are weak, they're admonished by the Qur'an and the Hadith to negotiate a peace treaty, or Hudna. When they're back on their military feet, so to speak, then they can break the treaty and go back to war.
Consider, as an example of Hudna defined through Al-Takeyya, the peace treaty entered into between Israel and Egypt following the 1967 Six Day War.
Strictly speaking, the treaty is a Hudna, not a permanent state of peace. Former Director General of Israel's Defense Ministry, Maj. General (res.) David Ivri, summarized the problem succinctly: "The peace with Egypt is not peace. It is actually a cease-fire. [Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak] has not created any Egyptian interest in Israel's continued existence."
For five centuries - ever since militant Islam was defeated in Spain back in the '90s (the 1490s that is) - the West has enjoyed a relative time of quiet. And even though it lasted for 500 years, the lull in military activities still only amounts to a Hudna, a time of cease fire so that the Muslims could reload.
And reload they did. With WMDs.
The Qur'an and the Hadith on Al-Takeyya
Here are three quotations from the Qur'an about deception:
"Allah will not call you to account for what is futile in your oaths, but He will call you to account for your deliberate oaths..." Surah 5:89
"Allah will not call you to account for thoughtlessness (vain) in your oaths, but for the intention in your hearts; and He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Forbearing." Surah 2:225
"Anyone who, after accepting faith in Allah, utters unbelief, except under compulsion, his heart remaining firm in faith - but such as open their breast to unbelief, on them is wrath from Allah, and theirs will be a dreadful penalty." Surah 16: 106
In his internet essay entitled "Lying in Islam", Abdullah Al-Araby writes:
"The Arabic word 'Takeyya' means 'to prevent', or guard against. The principle of Al-Takeyya conveys the understanding that Muslims are permitted to lie as a preventive measure against anticipated harm to one's self or fellow Muslims. This principle gives Muslims the liberty to lie under circumstances that they perceive as life-threatening. They can even deny the faith, if they do not mean it in their hearts. Al-Takeyya is based on the following Quranic verse:
"'Let not the believers take for friends or helpers Unbelievers rather than believers: if any do that, in nothing will there be help from Allah: except by way of precaution (prevention), that ye may guard yourselves from them (prevent them from harming you.) But Allah cautions you (to remember) Himself; for the final goal is to Allah.' (Surah 3: 28)
"According to this verse, a Muslim can pretend to befriend infidels (in violation of the teachings of Islam) and display adherence with their unbelief to prevent them from harming him.
"Under the concept of Al-Takeyya and short of killing another human being, if under the threat of force, it is legitimate for Muslims to act contrary to their faith. The following actions are acceptable:
"Drink wine, abandon prayers, and skip fasting during Ramadan.
"Renounce belief in Allah.
"Kneel in homage to a deity other than Allah.
"Utter insincere oaths."
Abdullah Al-Araby concludes his essay "Lying in Islam" with this sobering warning:
"Unfortunately, when dealing with Muslims, one must keep in mind that Muslims can communicate something with apparent sincerity, when in reality they may have just the opposite agenda in their hearts. Bluntly stated, Islam permits Muslims to lie anytime that they perceive that their own well-being, or that of Islam, is threatened.
"In the sphere of international politics, the question is: Can Muslim countries be trusted to keep their end of the agreements that they sign with non-Muslim nations? It is a known Islamic practice that when Muslims are weak they can agree with most anything. Once they become strong, then they negate what they formerly vowed.
"The principle of sanctioning lying for the cause of Islam bears grave implications in matters relating to the spread of the religion of Islam in the West. Muslim activists employ deceptive tactics in their attempts to polish Islam's image and make it more attractive to prospective converts. They carefully try to avoid, obscure and omit mentioning any of the negative Islamic texts and teachings.
"An example of Islamic deception is that Muslim activists always quote the passages of the Quran from the early part of Mohammed's ministry while living in Mecca. These texts are peaceful and exemplify tolerance towards those that are not followers of Islam. All the while, they are fully aware that most of these passages were abrogated (cancelled and replaced) by passages that came after he migrated to Medina. The replacement verses reflect prejudice, intolerance and endorse violence upon unbelievers
"In conclusion, it is imperative to understand, that Muslim leaders can use this loop-hole in their religion to absolve them from any permanent commitment. It is also important to know that what Muslim activists say to spread Islam may not always be the whole truth. When dealing with Muslims, what they say is not the issue. The real issue is what they actually mean in their hearts."
Could it Happen in the United States?
Now imagine if Al-Takeyya were being employed in a covert, behind-the-scenes attempt to convert America into a conservative, Wahabbi-like Islamic caliphate.
You know what a caliphate is, don't you? Think of any country in the world that has the suffix "-istan" attached to it and you won't be far off the mark. The "-istan" suffix means "Islamic Paradise": Afghanistan, Pakistan, and any other third-world wasteland, for that matter, fit this description.
Now imagine if the United States became Ameristan. That's the premise - and title - of a recently completed motion picture screenplay written by my twin brother, Charles.
Ameristan is a political thriller. It's premised on the unthinkable: the United States of America becomes a conservative Muslim state where Islamic Sharia is the law of the land. In Charles Welty's Ameristan, you still can't post the Ten Commandments in public schools, but Allah help you if you don't recite the Qur'an there three times a day.
Laura Mansfield, Analyst and Associate Director of the respected terror watchdog web site Northeast Intelligence Network, says this about the motion picture script: "Ameristan is something everyone should read. It is so plausible, it is frightening."
If you think Muslim terrorists aren't operating widely throughout the United States of America today, think again.
Al-Takeyya and the Future of America
Near the conclusion of Ameristan, after a group of conservative, Wahabbi-type Muslims have wreaked a potload of destruction on the United States of America, Abu Kareem, Ameristan's chief bad guy, places a cellular telephone call to investigative reporter Darryl Harb, taking responsibility for the death and destruction that has just occurred. Here's a sample of the dialogue between them:
HARB: Everything you did, everything you said... was a lie!
KAREEM: Of course, Mr. Harb. Al-Takeyya. The lie is different at every level. And we will wage our jihad until the West falls in submission. Because I say to you, America, and the West, you have no idea, no concept... [drawing it out] of just how much we hate you! [A quiet beat, then:] Allahu akbar, Mr. Harb.
If you haven't guessed yet, Darryl Harb, Ameristan's good guy and investigative reporter, takes his name from a deliberate pun on the Muslim term Dar al-Harb. Islam defines this term as territory under the hegemony of unbelievers that is on terms of active or potential belligerency with the domain of Islam.

Now comes word that the screenplay for Ameristan is slated for publication in novel form this coming September 11, the third anniversary of the destruction by conservative, Wahabbi-type radical Muslims of New York City's World Trade Center, the attack on the Pentagon, and the apparent attempted attack on the U.S. Capitol building.

"We should kill you for writing this." So said a caller who was stupid enough to leave a voicemail message about Ameristan on our office answering device.
Our response: Stand in line. After all the death threats we've already received, there are more than 14,000 ahead of you.
As for Charles and me, we follow the advice of our leader Jesus, who said, "Do not fear those who can kill the body, but after that they can do nothing more...."
Frankly, that's really good advice for both Jews and Christians when it comes to dealing with threats from conservative, Wahabbi-type, radical Muslims.
We're standing for the truth here.
Oops. I forgot for a moment. According to the Islamic principle of Al-Takeyya, I guess our conservative, Wahabbi-type, radical Muslim adversaries wouldn't know much about that.
Concluding Thoughts
