Morrissey's Alleged Remark Sparks Outcry

Thu Jun 10, 1:13 PM ET

LONDON - Morrissey, outspoken lead singer of '80s rockers The Smiths, has sparked an Internet storm with reported comments about President George W. Bush (news - web sites).

AP Photo

The Manchester Evening News said Thursday it had received a record number of hits after reporting on its Web site that Morrissey, 45, had interrupted a Dublin concert Saturday with news of former President Reagan's death, adding that he wished Bush had died instead.

Morrissey's record company, Sanctuary Records, could not confirm the remarks.

"We do not have a recording of the gig, but as far as we can tell, Morrissey was just alerting the audience to the fact that Ronald Reagan (news) had died," the newspaper quoted the company as saying. "He then simply followed that up with his comment about George Bush, which was his own opinion. He is no stranger to controversy."

A newspaper spokeswoman said thousands of people, 90 percent from the United States, had contacted the site to complain. A few expressed support for the remarks.

Formed in Manchester in the early 1980s, The Smiths had a series of British hits and a large cult following around the world, with songs including "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" and "Shoplifters of the World Unite."

A longtime proponent of celibacy and vegetarianism who once wrote a song titled "Bigmouth Strikes Again," Morrissey drew criticism in the early 1990s when he appeared to flirt with right-wing British nationalism.

He now lives in Los Angeles and is touring Europe for the first time in a decade to promote his latest solo album, "You Are the Quarry."

You know, this has always been an issue to me. I can't understand why the opinion of Susan Sarandon, Asner, PENN-FOR GAWD'S SAKE NEVER WENT TO COLLEGE PENN, Ferrell, even Springstein get off using their elevated status as artists as a springboard into politics. As if it automatically gives them license to tell ME how to vote!! THE DIXIE CHICKS??? The Dixie Chicks can't tell me what chili to eat let alone who to vote for. I don't want to hear their opinions. They don't have pol sci degrees. They weren't briefed by the pentagon this morning. No experience, no information, but yet they seem to drown us with their political agendas. Shut up and sing. Shut it and act.

*pant pant pant*

Sorry, but I just HATE that.

That's a riff on one of Morrissey's most girlie-man lyrics:

"There's a club, if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go, and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home, and you cry
And you want to die"

"How Soon Is Now?"

I hate it too, and don't understand why they feel they must make commentary on things.
That'd be like I, a former military artillery type, telling the Post Office how best to sort mail.
Or telling an ace car mechanic that he's wrong.

Loud mouths and Big pants.

The music and film entertainers and others in this industry (e.g. Morrissey, Madonna, Garfalo, Ditsy Chicks, Jethro Tull, Pearl Jam et al) just confirm to me, they don't need our $$ anymore. They're famous enough now and don't need us any longer.

Fine.

I always remember.

As in any business, doesn't seem to be the smartest tact to take by eliminating 1/2 your paying customers but, then again, many (entertainers and business/publicity agents) are not the brightest-pennies-in-the-fountain.

These people are morally corrupt and intellectually dishonest, anyway. The use of hate by this crowd is necessary to propagate their liberal ideology. The ends justify the means to these ilk. They can't help it. This is who they are.

I am so done with so many of these people, I don't even bother keeping track who's liberal. Nearly all are. I know which ones have conservative values and they are the one's who earn my entertainment $$.

Pretty simple.

Morrissey is timeless. Regardless of any politial statements. EOT.

Complaint rock has the same shelf-life as the chili-dog in Michael Moore's delivered lunch.

Check out these lyrics ( Margaret is Margaret Thatcher )from the VIVA HATE album ( 1987 ) !

MARGARET ON THE GUILLOTINE Lyrics

The kind people
Have a wonderful dream
Margaret On The Guillotine
Cause people like you
Make me feel so tired
When will you die ?
When will you die ?
When will you die ?
When will you die ?
When will you die ?

And people like you
Make me feel so old inside
Please die

And kind people
Do not shelter this dream
Make it real
Make the dream real
Make the dream real
Make it real
Make the dream real
Make it real

I feel very foolish for not having realized he was talking about Thatcher... What a tool.

Actually, he's straight. A camera crew stalked him a few years ago to find out.

No way. No straight guy would ever write the lyrics to "Hand in Glove," let alone sing it.

Ah, beat me to it. Johnny Marr is a great guitarist.

Truly one of the best to have ever graced the pop stage. His jangly chord riffs on This Charming Man, for example, are stellar. Nobody plays off the options on those 3-note chord voicings better than Marr.

You may be correct, but I find that very hard to believe. If you painted a bull's eye on your butt and paraded around P-Town in a Liza costume singing Bette Midler tunes you couldn't get any more gay than Hairdresser on Fire or Hand in Glove ("the sun shines out of our behinds").

"How Soon Is Now?"

Ah, what bon mots. You can practically envision the ugly duckling 15-year-old girl, dressed in black, an open diary on her bedside table, reading Oscar Wilde and crying because the world doesn't get her.

Advocating liberal hunting maybe?

"Morrissey is timeless."

Actually what you should have written is Morrisey is worthless, irrelevant and gutless.
