An elite U.S. Special Forces team rescued three Italians and one Polish hostage from pro-Saddam kidnappers yesterday in a daring commando raid south of Baghdad.
In a dramatic development seen as a huge boost to coalition forces, military officials said a special hostage-rescue team from the legendary Delta Force carried out the carefully choreographed mission without firing a shot.
Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, said suspects "involved in the kidnapping" also were arrested at the undisclosed hideout.
The three Italian hostages, Umberto Cupertino, Maurizio Agliana and Salvatore Stefio, were security guards employed by an American firm and were kidnapped April 12.

The guys were pro-Saddam ? These days you'd think they all are Islamists. Maybe that's why the Delta team didn't have to fire one shot ? I mean, whatever happens in Iraq now, a return to Saddamite rule does not seem likely...

According to "Gazeta Wyborcza" the biggest polish daily newspaper, the polish hostage was rescued by GROM SF soldiers. Accoring to the paper, the american intelligence was listening the cell phones of the terrorists. They knew the italians were there, but when they found out about the polish hostage, they approved the polish special forces to join the operation to save the hostages.
