As president, Ronald Reagan did not always please his conservative supporters, but with the benefit of hindsight, they say his leadership was vital to the success of their movement.

"He was not God, but he did have convictions that were 'unlobbyable' and a vision for America, which obsessed him and drove him to success," said the Rev. Jerry Falwell, founder of the Moral Majority, which supported Mr. Reagan in 1980 and '84. "He put the moral and social issues of our time on the front burner, where they have stayed."

I'm really hoping that this appreciation of Reagans values will encourage appreciation of President Bush with the same values.

The conservative faithful wondered why, if Mr. Reagan "was willing to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on the military and missile defense to bring the Soviet Union to its knees, why not take on a domestic issue like Social Security?"

Maybe it's because the defense of the Nation is the one option of the two that is actually declared in the Constitution.

I hope President Reagan bequeathed some conservatism for President Bush.

Well .. if there was so much spending in CA, how did Reagan end up with such a surplus when he left office ..?? Doesn't make any sense.

I believe the President is conservative in the things that matter most, and I think he will do many things we conservatives want if he is given a second term and no longer has to think about re-election.

Spending and deficits can't be helped during a time of war.

I agree with that. I had in mind border policy, illegal alien amnesties by whatever name, and the like.

Loving this, as some have even forgotten that Reagan did compromise just as Bush ha., and some who did realize it and didn't like it, are now changing their tunes too. Best of both worlds. A leader HAS to compromise on some things, to get the most important things.

Hey, I'm here in South Texas 30 miles from the coast so I know about the borders!! We just got back from Mexico on the Memorial Day weekend and had to wait in line for two hours to get back across the border!

I honestly think he doesn't want to offend the Hispanics by closing the border, but he has made us unhappy about it.

My daughter lives in Harlingen and the illegals work the farms down there, it's just a fact of life. I doubt if you or I would want to pick vegetibles all day in that heat for low pay.

I just don't think they should get free medical care, etc, when we have to pay top price.
