June 7, 2004 -- Ronald Reagan made the American Dream come true in his own life because he believed in American ideals - and said so. Everyone remembers him at the boundary between East and West Berlin, declaring, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"

But few recall how simplistic, how naive - how American - it was at the time.

Helmut Kohl, the German chancellor who was at the Brandenberg gate that day, recalled:

"Many have long since forgotten or dismissed from their minds the fact that at the time, they were amused or even felt embarrassed by these words.

"Ronald Reagan meant what he said and he was right."

That was Reagan's secret.
