Kerry Postpones Campaign to Honor Reagan

10:38 PM EST - June 05, 2004

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON

Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry plans to take time off the campaign trail to observe Ronald Reagan's death, saying Americans "bow their heads in prayer and gratitude that President Reagan left such an indelible stamp on the nation he loved."

Kerry said the nation's 40th president, who died Saturday at the age of 93 after struggling with Alzheimer's disease, lived by a noble ideal of bipartisanship.

"Even when he was breaking Democrats hearts, he did so with a smile and in the spirit of honest and open debate," Kerry said in a statement. "The differences were real, but because of the way President Reagan led, he taught us that there is a big difference between strong beliefs and bitter partisanship."

Kerry planned to speak Sunday with a tribute to Reagan at Michigan's Bedford High School graduation being held across the state line in Toledo, Ohio. He canceled a trip to Denver Sunday night to return to Washington, where Reagan's body was to be flown.

Kerry spokesman David Wade said it had not been determined Saturday night when he would resume his schedule. Kerry had planned to give a speech in Denver Monday morning, then travel to Los Angeles for a star-studded fund-raiser at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Kerry, who had previously scheduled Saturday off from campaigning, urged political leaders to look to Reagan's example.

"Today in the face of new challenges," Kerry said, "his example reminds us that we must move forward with optimism and resolve. He was our oldest president, but he made America young again."

How touching. I am sure this has nothing to do with the fact that any campaigning will be drowned out by coverage of Reagan's funeral.

Dude... How many threads are you going to start tonight?

I have noticed most of them pretty much are the kind that will stir things up.

Kerry knows that he'd be eaten alive if he dared campaign before President Reagan is buried.

I would like to add....IF Kerry really wanted to honor Reagan, he would resign from politics and step out of the spotlight for the rest of his life.

Mhhhmmm...that sure sounds like he's suspended his campaign.

He was our oldest president,

What a fine tribute, Senator!

Maybe a little. Reagan just passed a few hours ago, and some people simply have no class at all. I am speaking about the Danny Glovers and the sickos at DU (comments I read in a thread HERE) and I think I have had enough of it for the night.

Sorry if I offended you ambrose. It was certainly not intended.

There should be some type of rule that forbids The use of the following names in threads involving Ronald Reagan on this terrible day. They should include CLINTON, Kerry, Kennedy, Pelosi, Daschle for you could combine whatever dignity they have and it still would have less dignity than a jug of RONALD WILSON REAGAN'S Spit

No problem.

You do realize that while most won't openly spit on his grave, most Rats will do their dirty work in a much more subtle fashion, via backhanded complements, calls for fetal research, etc., etc.
