A Jordanian man has reportedly shot his unmarried cousin dead as she recovered in hospital after delivering a baby.
The 35-year-old who has not been named then surrendered to police, saying he acted to "cleanse his family's honour".
Stunned medical staff were present as the suspect and his two brothers ran into the woman's room and opened fire.
The 25-year-old mother was hit by six gunshots, the Jordan Times reported, quoting official sources. The day-old baby lying next to her was unharmed.
The two brothers reportedly turned themselves in later on. None of the people involved were named by the paper.
Murder charges
The newborn baby - who was delivered by Caesarean section on Monday - was sent to a government social institution, the official source was quoted as saying.
The main suspect is to be charged with premeditated murder and his brothers with being accessories to premeditated murder, the source said.
Jordan Times says this is the third case of so-called "honour" killing in the country this week. It also quotes official figures which say that nine women have died in such killings this year. No explanation is given for the apparent rise in deaths.
Campaigners say Jordanian courts often hand down very lenient sentences for male relatives who commit honour crimes.
Last year, the Jordan Times reported that a man received a four-month prison sentence for murdering his younger pregnant sister "in a fit of rage".
Parliament has twice rejected proposed changes in the law that would impose harsher punishments for "honour killings".
That is because these men "can't be expected to help themselves, why, the evil, unclean woman made him rape her!" It is always the woman's fault in these matters there. A man cannot possibly be held responsible for raping a woman, even a retarded, blind, deaf, paralyzed - you name it - woman. She is always at fault.< /sarcasm>
These s---holes don't seem to realize, that if they keep killing off muslim women, there won't be any muslim men. (One can only hope!) But then again, they are so incredibly stupid, they believe that a woman can conceive several years prior to giving birth. The numbskulls don't even know the basics. It's amazing to me that this group of freaks didn't die off long ago due to utter ignorance.
But Islam certainly allows it to flourish, doesn't it. That's the thing - maybe a good argument could be made for its "disconnect" from Islam, as you put it, but it would hardly be allowed to continue here, for example. On the other hand, where sharia law is practiced, honor killings seem to be under-prosecuted, to say the least.
I don't recall one case of this despicable "honor killing" crime in the Bible.

That's just a great attitude. I wonder where this hatred of women comes from in the East? What's that saying? My and my cousin against the stranger, my brother & I against my cousin? I guess it should go on to say, and all of us together against the women.

A devil's advocate could argue that at least they kill someone (or I guess they might argue, something- a woman) that has wronged them by virtue of their (its) actions.
Many western (enlightened) societies on the other hand, dispense with the four month penalty and instead proceed to outright sanction, nay codify, the elimination of fetuses (at a rate far in excess of honor killings BTW).
The enlightened society attempts to get around this thorny logical connundrum by saying that we are not a barbaric society, because we believe that abortion does not kill a human being or by trumpeting a waman's "right to chose".
In the honor killer's eyes, western society's degradation of the value of a fetus' life is worse than honor killings, as the victim of abortion (i.e. fetus) has done nothing against the perpetrator (pregnant mother).
Bottom line, if your position is pro-abortion, I think it is difficult to rage against these nuts for their killing of lowly females who have wronged them vs lowly fetuses that, by no fault of their own, are suffering dismemberment at that hands of a surgeon carrying out the will of an inconvenienced woman craving hassle-free sexual activity (let us exclude discussion of abortion for rape etc, where the woman had no choice in the sex act).

That is not my understanding. Although suttee was a barbaric practice (it has been banned for many, many years), it was only really practiced by the elite. Hindu women are highly revered if they are of the right caste. Low caste or untouchables, whether man or woman, are fair game for almost any abuse.
These religions enable this kind of behavior, and are justly condemned on that basis. Religion is supposed to correct spiritual deficiencies, not support them. But the base cause of the fault lies elsewhere.
Both abortion and honor killing are evil.
