Honour Killing in Jordan Hospital (Scum Murders Unmarried Cousin... 1 Day After She Gives Birth!)

A Jordanian man has reportedly shot his unmarried cousin dead as she recovered in hospital after delivering a baby.

The 35-year-old who has not been named then surrendered to police, saying he acted to "cleanse his family's honour".

Stunned medical staff were present as the suspect and his two brothers ran into the woman's room and opened fire.

The 25-year-old mother was hit by six gunshots, the Jordan Times reported, quoting official sources. The day-old baby lying next to her was unharmed.

The two brothers reportedly turned themselves in later on. None of the people involved were named by the paper.

Murder charges

The newborn baby - who was delivered by Caesarean section on Monday - was sent to a government social institution, the official source was quoted as saying.

The main suspect is to be charged with premeditated murder and his brothers with being accessories to premeditated murder, the source said.

Jordan Times says this is the third case of so-called "honour" killing in the country this week. It also quotes official figures which say that nine women have died in such killings this year. No explanation is given for the apparent rise in deaths.

Campaigners say Jordanian courts often hand down very lenient sentences for male relatives who commit honour crimes.

Last year, the Jordan Times reported that a man received a four-month prison sentence for murdering his younger pregnant sister "in a fit of rage".

Parliament has twice rejected proposed changes in the law that would impose harsher punishments for "honour killings".

Unfortunately this atitude is present in both Islamic and Christian segments of Jordanian society. In 1976 I was stationed at the US Embassy in Amman, Jordan. Each day one of the embassy staffers translated articles of interest about events in the region that weren't reported in the english-language press.
One afternoon the translation reported on a local incident where a husband had tired of his wife, so he let on to his wife's brother that they had had sex before they were married. The brother became enraged and shot his sister to death. I was taking a break in the embassy lunchroom while I was reading this and said to the several Jordanian female employees--all of whom were either Catholic or Greek Orthodox--that that what had happened was terrible for three reasons:
1. It was none of the brother's business
2. Even if it had been the brother's business, no harm was done because the couple had married and
3. what was done was not so terrible as to deserve murder.

The women were aghast at my statement, "The brother did the right thing! He removed the stain that the woman had placed on his family's honor!"
I asked, "Then why didn't the husband deserve death too? He was as guilty as his wife was."
One of the women said, "When a man stains his family's honor it is temporary, but when a woman stains her family's honor, the stain lasts until she dies."

You are correct. I did a paper on this at KSU back in 1999/2000. The stats I used would be a bit out of date now but there is/was a big problem with dowry murders in that country.
