ABC weighing midafternoon Indy 500 start in future [my title]

[snip]

This might be the last year [Robby Gordon or anyone for that matter] can attempt the Memorial Day weekend double. Officials at ABC have discussed the possibility of pushing the starting time of the Indy 500 back by a couple of hours to help with TV ratings.

If that happens, the chance of anyone competing in both races is diminished.

"It would mess it up, but it is what it is," Gordon said. "I think that would be a mistake on the IRL's side because then Tony Stewart or myself would never be able to come over and compete.

"It would get them better TV ratings. But if they had drivers like Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart there, their ratings would probably go up as well."

I don't think much will help their ratings unless A.J. and Johnny Rutherford dust off their driver's suits.

SS. Thus helping the supreme commander Tony George complete the clean sweep with "foreign drivers' in every car!

BTW They don't want "smoke" coming back and kickin their foreign candy butts.

The only way this would work is if NASCAR would move the Coca-Cola 600 to Saturday night. But I wouldn't mind that.

Has there ever been a case where a once huge event has been reduced to irrelevancy as quickly as has the Indy 500?

Can anyone name a driver in the current Indy 500 besides Robbie Gordon? Without star power Indy is like a local short track race. Someone will win but few will care beyond the people who attended.

So much for ratings. Indy type cars are going the way of the Edsel. Nascar kicks butt!

I blame Tony George for this mess. If he and CART had settled their differences the Indy 500 would still be among the most prominent races of the year. Instead, it's very likely the ratings for the Coca-Cola (neé World) 600 would be higher this year.

Is this the Indy500 thread? Pretty week....I bet the World600...I mean Coke600 thread will get 1000 posts this evening. I had a pretty good idea the race would be delayed. They would get a bigger audience if it started later on the West Coast. But, what the heck, it is a race for the people of the midwest. If they want to get up and enter the track at 5am, let them. Remember, they make their money on the 250,000 tickets sold, not the TV audience.

I guess it is the Indy 500 thread.

NASCAR is fine, its fun to watch, etc. But it is much harder to drive an open wheel car around Indy then it is to drive a restrictor place stock car around Daytona.

Jim Nabors is still alive! Each year, I use his performance here to confirm that. He is still belting it out.

Out of college, I spent one year on the NHRA tour, then three years on the CART tour, doing PR for Generous Motors. I have been to plenty of Rose Bowls, an Orange Bowl, and Super Bowl....but there is nothing like the Indy 500 in sheer crowd size.
