New evidence of a link between Iraq and al Qaeda.

Saddam's Files New evidence of a link between Iraq and al Qaeda.

Thursday, May 27, 2004 12:01 a.m. EDT

One thing we've learned about Iraq since the fall of Saddam Hussein is that the former dictator was a diligent record keeper. Coalition forces have found--literally--millions of documents. These papers are still being sorted, translated and absorbed, but they are already turning up new facts about Saddam's links to terrorism.

We realize that even raising this subject now is politically incorrect. It is an article of faith among war opponents that there were no links whatsoever--that "secular" Saddam and fundamentalist Islamic terrorists didn't mix. But John Ashcroft's press conference yesterday reminds us that the terror threat remains, and it seems especially irresponsible for journalists not to be open to new evidence. If the CIA was wrong about WMD, couldn't it have also missed Saddam's terror links?

One striking bit of new evidence is that the name Ahmed Hikmat Shakir appears on three captured rosters of officers in Saddam Fedayeen, the elite paramilitary group run by Saddam's son Uday and entrusted with doing much of the regime's dirty work. Our government sources, who have seen translations of the documents, say Shakir is listed with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.

This matters because if Shakir was an officer in the Fedayeen, it would establish a direct link between Iraq and the al Qaeda operatives who planned 9/11. Shakir was present at the January 2000 al Qaeda "summit" in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at which the 9/11 attacks were planned. The U.S. has never been sure whether he was there on behalf of the Iraqi regime or whether he was an Iraqi Islamicist who hooked up with al Qaeda on his own.

Only one problem. NO ONE is going to hear about this since the major news outlets aren't going to cover it.

Actually any person in their right mind would have known that Iraq and al Qaeda were soul brothers from day one! This great United States of ours is going to pay a hefty price in lives because it is listening to the likes of John Kerry and the "traitor" Democrat Party.

I hope this gets more press coverage than the Sarin Gas bombs did. ABC communist radio news; the most biased, seditious reporting I know of on the airwaves belittled and downplayed the sarin gas story.

Yesterday on NPR, a commentator was mocking the Homeland Security warnings about suicide bombers and still speaking with the premise that there were no WMD in Iraq.

It's a well-known fact that Saddam was paying money to the families of deceased palestinian suicide bombers!

So were the Nazis; but just like some lunatics argue that exhaustive Nazi records of genocide should be dismissed, there will be lunatics who argue that Saddam's records should be dismissed. I hope they enjoy the company they've chosen.

Saddam had the Quaran written in his own blood. He identified with an early Muslim war lord that he was said to be the reincarnation of. He sure fooled a lot of Iraqis that he was "secular" and the Arab Street.

Also the American-left really loved him because he was a socialist dictator that the lefties glorify under any circumstances!!

To: anyone

There is suppose to be a rally/march of liberal groups including MovingOn.Com people.-protesting the Iraqi turnover.

Items like THIS and others should be put on posters and MARCHED infront of them!

Hey!! Who has enough money to buy a newspaper here?

Don't look at me- I am still in High School!!

Didn't Saddam welcome with open arms an Al Qaeda?/ and the we already found those notes stating the little details about keeping him in what hotel--and saving receipts and such? Everytime I hear " There was no link to Al Qaeda and Iraq I crinch.

Thank God they were nuts about bookeeping--but I hope THESE notes do not disappear like the computer info that was erased about the UN Oil for Bribe stuff!! ( is Hillary in Iraq??)

Neither - he was recruiting for Moveon.org

There was a link between Saddam and some of the feyadeen as far back as 1990-1991 , according to "Shadow Warriors" by Tom Clancey and Carl Stiner. (This book was published before 9/11.)

One of the mysteries of postwar Iraq is why the Bush Administration and our $40-billion-a-year intelligence services haven't devoted more resources to probing the links between Saddam's regime and al Qaeda.

Let's hope the Bush Administration knows a lot more about this link than they have publicly disclosed.

I think so. Don't get me wrong.

But chances are that people who read WSJ already know removing Hussein was part of the war on terror.

I'm talking about the news sources for the people who are undecided.
