Yes it is tragic and weird. Is there some kind of Middle Eastern custom, like receptions going on until the wee hours or something that might account for it?

This is very bad.

there have been weddings where they shot guns into the air, hitting American helicopters, and got shot at in return...but I agree, not at 2 am...

I find this hard to believe. Not even Iraqi children stay up until 2:45 in the morning.

It is much more likely that the terrorists were using their wives and children as human shields to shoot at our troops.

US pilots do not have free fire authority. I'm sure that the wedding party was firing automatic weapons into the air, probably in the vacinity of US aircraft, which triggered approval for returning fire.

I've heard some accounts say that there was a party, US troops went in to check it out, then left.

Sometime later, the missles came in.

I'm thinking there's more to this story than the media is willing to reveal. They will eventually, but only after they get the looney left into a lather so that anything that comes later to clarify the situation is lost in the frenzy.

And .. were they shooting off their rifles again as part of the celebration ..??

If you're going to shoot off rifles while there is air power in the sky .. you better be prepared to get shot at. While it's unfortunate

The Drudge Report tells the story with a few more details. The wedding party shoots in the air. US ground troops come to investigate. Later on, the helicopters come in shoot.

Even though at 2:45 am, the wedding could have been hours earlier and these were the revelers at the wedding party.

I have no idea what wedding customs are. 2:45 seems late to me unless you've got beer and a band. I didn't think muslims did the beer/band thing.

This was not only in a war zone, it was near a border over which murderous weapons have been smuggled into Iraq. As a rule both the wedding and the reception have been over for many hours by 2:45 AM and the couple have consumated their marriage for the fifteenth time.

Tragic is the spin being put on this situation, weird is everything else about it.

These people by their cowardly nature hide their evil activities among women and children. It sounds more like a shipment of smuggled weapons for some yet to be determined reason, ignited.

The Associated Press is an eagerly willing agent for the cause of our enemies. Seems to me that every negative thing I hear or read is a product of the AP.
